Great Rally, Great Music, and More
By Lee Harrelson, Entertainment Chair
Early arrivals and rally volunteers will be treated Wednesday night to an unusual musical couple. Lucy Tight & Wayne Waxing are "Hymn For Her", a band that hails from anywhere they can park their trailer. H4H live, tour and record in their 16-foot, 1961 Bambi Airstream (comes with dog and baby). Their new release, 'Lucy & Wayne and THE AMAIRICAN STREAM' was entirely recorded in their classic trailer on a coast to coast U.S. tour.
Thursday night BMW MOA member Greg Speck brings his hard stomping zydeco band for our entertainment. Captain Squeeze and the Zydeo Moshers. It's hard to imagine that fifteen years ago this upstate New York band was formed by a father and his two sons as a one shot deal to help raise funds for the Cathedral of All Saints Men and Boys Choir in Albany, NY at a Mardi Gras party. Their unique interpretations reflect influences from the zydeco world of CJ Chenier, Terrence Simeon, Buckwheat Zydeco and so many others.
Later Thursday night we welcome Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds. http://www.sistersparrow.com A nine piece band out of NJ. They have a killer horn section.
(Full music schedule at bottom of this page)Friday night begins with David Jacobs Strain. He's a Slide guitarist and singer-songwriter who grew up in Oregon, far from Mississippi, but found his first musical home in the Delta blues. "I've always been drawn to the dark stuff," David says. This young roots musician channels age-old wisdom and heartache with such energy and passion that you can't help but feel good, even about feeling bad. In 2009 he worked on a new album of mostly original songs produced by Nashville-based Ray Kennedy (Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Ray Davies).
Then our first three-time performer! Back by popular demand Paul Thorn and his band. Among those who value originality, inspiration, eccentricity, and character - as well as talent that hovers somewhere on the outskirts of genius, the story of Paul Thorn is already familiar. Now, Thorn reveals another layer of his fascinating history on the album Pimps & Preachers, addressing that subject on the title cut and in the intriguing "family portrait" he painted for the cover, which highlights his daddy the preacher and his uncle the pimp. They plain "Killed" two years ago in Johnson City and were requested so much by members we invited them back last year to Redmond. Where Paul even entertained us with a solo set with a new mandolin.
Then hold on to your spot because next up, all the way from Los Angeles just for our event is Shooter Jennings and Hierophant. The only son of country legends Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, ShooterJennings literally spent his childhood on a tour bus. Born Waylon Albright Jennings, Shooter was playing drums by the time he was five years old and had already begun taking piano lessons, only to break them off and follow his own path to an understanding of the instrument. His fourth studio album, Black Ribbons, produced by Dave Cobb, was released in 2010 and received great critical acclaim and solid sales. Shooter is currently working on a new country album scheduled for release by Savoy Label Group's 429 Records/Black Country Rock in late August 2011.
Saturday immediately following closing ceremonies hurry back to get your spot for a killer band from Nashville, TN. It's a rare thing when the stars line up to bring together musicians of this magnitude. Rarer still is that they all thought it sounded like fun to come out of the studio and off the road to dedicate time playing classic blues, rock and R&B songs. Adding their original contributions to these musical styles, HiPower's show becomes jaw-dropping entertainment. HiPower is the brainchild of triple Grammy award-winning musician Al Perkins, who's recorded, played with and/or produced some of the greatest artists in the history of American music, including Bob Dylan, The Eagles, Emmylou Harris, Dan Fogelberg, Dwight Yoakam, Gram Parsons, Dolly Parton, James Taylor, The Rolling Stones, Stephen Stills', as well as over a hundred other names you've heard of.
And then we take to Highway 101. From the moment they formed, Highway 101 presented a new approach to country music. The group's blend of country roots and tradition with rock 'n roll energy helped to catapult the country genre forward, tapping a whole new audience and paving the way for such mass appeal artists as Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson and Tim McGraw.
