Just do it...
Everyone who has straddled a motorcycle has felt it, that tinge of nervousness, the little knot in the stomach that comes with the excitement and joy of being a new rider. Over time, practice, experience and knowledge let us put most of that early nervousness behind us and enjoy ourselves. The BMW Motorcycle Owners of America Foundation will offer Camp Gears for riders age 16 to 26 July 19 and 20 as part of this year's International Rally to give young riders an opportunity to gain the knowledge and experience they need to ride confidently and safely.
At the same time, campers will have the opportunity to meet other new riders and become part of the larger BMW MOA community. The two days of Camp Gears is free and those who participate and complete the course will receive free admission to the rally.

There is no question that young, inexperienced riders are more likely to be involved in accidents. According to the Insurance Information Institute and the National Traffic Safety Administration, more than 8000 riders age 15-20 were injured in crashes in 2008. Sadly, 346 were killed. The goal of Camp Gears is to give our campers the knowledge and skills needed to help keep them from being one of those statistics.
Day One: Rider and Machine
During the first day of Camp Gears, campers will learn about the various types of riding gear ad helmets, what might work best for them and how to find the best deals on that gear. We will also look at how to take care of ourselves, from proper hydration to first aid. Campers will learn the basics about the mechanical workings of their bikes, including routine maintenance and roadside diagnosis.
Day Two: The Road
Campers will learn riding skills from highly-experienced instructors and have the opportunity to find out about their strengths and weaknesses using the SMARTrainer, a computer-aided trainer. We'll also discuss different types of riding and road trips and give campers an opportunity to determine what kind of riding and distances work best with their individual styles and skill levels. Campers will learn about packing their bikes, motorcycle camping and trip planning. Campers will also get a chance to taste their skills in a fun way, competing against each other in field games.
We'll end the official part of Camp Gears with dinner with MOA Ambassadors and a graduation ceremony.
At the Rally
As part of the Camp Gears experience, campers will be enrolled at no cost in the Basic Riders Course 2, held the first day of the rally, providing them with an opportunity to refine their skills even further. As rally participants, they will also have the opportunity to participate in rally seminars and activities. Campers will be encouraged to participate as volunteers as well.
