BMW MOA FOUNDATION - MSF's Seasoned Rider Course

The BMW Motorcycle Owners of America, through its educational arm, the BMW MOA Foundation, will present a seminar dealing with the effects of aging on motorcyclists.  The average age of a BMW rider is about 53 years. Those years bring an abundance of experience but those years also bring the effects of aging. Safe motorcycle riding requires concentration, coordination, balance and the ability to make quick, effective, decisions. The effects of aging may influence safety; therefore, it's important that seasoned riders correct or compensate for the changes that occur with age. Class is limited to 25 attendees; pre-registration is recommended.

Mark McMahon, who has degrees in RF/Electrical Engineering, Business and Audiology and his wife, Linda, own Brite Ears, Inc.  They will be discussing your hearing and what happens to it when you ride.  They will talk about reducing and possibly preventing further damage to your hearing by utilizing the proper hearing protection.  They will also touch on early warning signs of hearing loss and what can be done to minimize these symptoms and what can be done, now, to protect the hearing that you have left.  Also to be discussed will be new products available to connect to your sound, music, GPS, and Bluetooth systems.

George Young is a 67 year old retired insurance agent who has ridden motorcycles for forty years, the last 25 years as a member of the BMW MOA.  Not only is riding his long-time passion, he also teaches MSF in several states and has also conducted some of the ERCs at the National Rallies.  A year ago his life was changed when a drunk driver ran him down and took off his left leg BTK.   He will share some of the knowledge he has gained in the process of getting back on a bike and continuing to be a motorcyclist.

For 13 years Paul Glaves has been the Technical Editor for the BMW Owners News, serving three consecutive Managing Editors.  His column, "Benchwrenching" is a regular feature in the magazine.  Paul has written broadly about Oilheads, Classic K bikes, and Airheads throughout the years.  He has presented "Very Basic Tech" and a companion seminar, "Not So Basic Tech" at BMW MOA rallies for over 10 years.  In this seminar Paul presents the basic mechanical issues every rider ought to be aware of as an owner and traveler with a BMW motorcycle.  The session will be part presentation and part question and answer, aimed at riders who are not mechanically experienced.

Think Motorcycles and Share the Road - Raising motorcycle awareness in your own communities

The BMW MOA Foundation is working on developing an awareness effort that focuses on encouraging motorists to look for motorcyclists.    Part of the program involves the awareness signs placed around town before the rally.  Another aspect of the effort is a program that is designed to be presented to local community groups, driver education classes, etc. to increase awareness among motorists.  This program can be presented by riders to local community groups, driver education classes, etc. to increase the awareness of automobile drivers as they share the road with motorcyclists.  Our hope is that BMW riders and local clubs will take the initiative and present this program to local motorists.  In this seminar, the Gold Wing Road Riders Association's Motorist Awareness Program Coordinators will share with us the program they use to increase awareness of both motorcyclists and, importantly, motorists.

The BMW Motorcycle Owners of America, through its educational arm, the BMW MOA Foundation, will present a seminar dealing with the effects of aging on motorcyclists.  The average age of a BMW rider is about 53 years. Those years bring an abundance of experience but those years also bring the effects of aging. Safe motorcycle riding requires concentration, coordination, balance and the ability to make quick, effective, decisions. The effects of aging may influence safety; therefore, it's important that seasoned riders correct or compensate for the changes that occur with age. Class is limited to 25 attendees; pre-registration is recommended.

Skert's  "Dropped Bike Demonstration"

SKERT, aka Carol Youorski, has put over 200k on BMW's.  Because of her short height and her original desire to ride a K75 as her first BMW, she needed to learn how to pick the bike up, a lot, due to her beginning inability to balance the bike correctly while on tip toes.  Since those days she has ridden several different bikes and has dropped them in some of the most interesting places.  Having heard, as most of you have, that if you can't pick up your own bike you shouldn't ride, Skert has devised a technique for getting a bike upright that even the smallest person can do.

Riding with Prosthetics... How to ride a motorcycle with missing or damaged parts-----on you, not the bike!!

George Young is a 67 year old retired insurance agent who has ridden motorcycles for forty years, the last 25 years as a member of the BMW MOA.  Not only is riding his long-time passion, he also teaches MSF in several states and has also conducted some of the ERCs at the National Rallies.  A year ago his life was changed when a drunk driver ran him down and took off his left leg BTK.   He will share some of the knowledge he has gained in the process of getting back on a bike and continuing to be a motorcyclist.
