2008 International Rally:
Wyoming and Cattle Guards

Greetings from Gillette!
I am writing this article to inform
you about one of Wyoming's high-
way hazards. This particular hazard is one
that will sneak up on you when entering
or exiting the interstate or any state road.
ALL ramps, on and off, have what we call
"cattle guards" which are placed in the
road bed. These are steel bars that run
across the width of the road, with about a
four inch space between each bar, they are
VERY slippery when they are wet or if you
hit them at an angle. Enclosed is a photo
showing the placement in alignment with
the fence line. This one is at Moorcroft
WY. and is treacherous because it is right
at the spot where you start your turn.
You also have to watch out for cattle and
other wildlife on the roads.
There are several rules in Wyoming: #1. Cows have the right-of-way. This is an
open range state. Watch for wildlife - deer
run right into you, antelope run alongside
you then turn in front of you, and elk are
too big to even think about hitting. But,
always remember rule #1 - that's why we
have "cattle guards" or if you insist - auto
gates. See you in July 2008.
