Are you coming into Wisconsin this summer from the west, via I-90? If so, I encourage you to take time for a short, exhilarating diversion from the drone of the freeway.
Just 12 miles after you cross the Mississippi River in La Crosse, you will see the exit for the small town of West Salem. Nestled just north of this sleepy little town is a circle-route with challenging curves and incredible scenery. This is "Coulee Country," named for its short, steep ravines and long ridges.
The coulee region of western Wisconsin is well-known for great sport riding, and this circle route which includes Hwy 108 between West Salem and Mindoro might be some of the best examples of these roads in the state. The actual "Mindoro Cut" passes through sandstone and hard granite. It was carved with hand tools and horse-drawn equipment in 1907 and is one of the oldest and largest hand-hewn cuts in the nation. Be sure to stop at the gravel pull-out area on the northwest side of the cut for the obligatory photo-op and to appreciate the sheer magnitude of the century-old workmanship.
ROUTE: Exit I-90 at West Salem (exit #12) and head north on Hwy 108. I recommend a circle route, by heading north on Hwy C, then west on DE, and then turn south in Mindoro on 108. Total trip is less than 30 miles.
After this brief escape from the tedium of the freeway, you may decide to play more in this wonderful part of our state. Just 25 miles south of the Mindoro Cut is Wildcat Mountain, and more great riding. We hope you take the time to experience these, and some of the other great roads that Wisconsin offers while you visit this summer. You are, after all, on vacation! As a bonus, you will be the envy of others at the rally as you brag about this sweet little route that few know about and fewer have ridden. |
