Flags of Freedom Field
No doubt you have been reading about Lima area attractions in your personal
copy of BMW Owners News. But you may not have noticed any reports describing
the Flags of Freedom Foundation Field in Wapakoneta, just 12 miles south of
the rally site, off Interstate 75. It is a thirty acre Educational Park and
Museum dedicated to the universal symbol representing freedom and liberty throughout
the world: the Flag of the United States of America. It is a family oriented
historical and educational facility that teaches and instills the traditional
meanings of Patriotism, Dignity, Honor and Respect, with particular attention
being paid to American Values, Achievers and Heroes, and especially those who
have served their country. For details: http://www.bright.net/~freedom/.
Bicycle Museum of America
Just a 45 minute ride in the same direction from the rally is the Bicycle Museum
of America. If you saw the Guggenheim Museum's "Art of the Motorcycle" show,
and if you ever rode a bicycle, you need to see this place. Address: 7 West
Monroe Street, New Bremen, Ohio. Details: http://www.bicyclemuseum.com/
Glass Heritage Museum
Fostoria, Ohio, 58 miles northeast of the rally
grounds is the Fostoria Glass Museum. (On the road to the Sandusky
amusement park that claims one of the world's highest, fastest roller
coasters.) Fostoria had 13 glass factories from 1887 - 1920. The museum has
more than 1,000 glass artifacts from that period by those companies. The
displays feature clear, three-layered and prism colored glass and more. One
upon a time, Fostoria provided 60 percent of all manufactured kerosene lamps
in America. These included large, small and multi-colored models. Antique
tableware is also displayed at the museum, which is open only Tuesday thru
Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 109 North Main Street.
