The 2012 Dakar Rally rolled to a finish in Lima, Peru on January 15, with France's Cyril Despres taking his fourth Dakar title in the motorcycling category.

Traditionally the first major motorsport event of the new year is the Rally Dakar. And so it is again in 2012, when around 190 motorcycle racers begin their 8,364 kilometer long adventure across South America.

 

Valerie Thompson has become the latest star of the Bonneville Salt Flats after pushing her BMW S 1000 RR past the 200mph mark on her first time out on the machine. The super-speeder now says she'd never ride anything but her "wicked fast" BMW machine.

Glenn Allerton has secured the 2011 Australian Superbike Championship with one round to spare. The 30-year-old grabbed the ASBK title on his S1000RR in an incident-packed seventh round of the series at Symmons Plains in Tasmania.

BMW Motorrad Italia has completed its rider line-up for next year's Superbike World Championship, with the signing of Michel Fabrizio to partner fellow Italian Ayrton Badovini on the BMW S1000RR.

Team BMW Motorrad France 99 has snatched the top spot in the FIM Endurance World Championship standings after a top-class performance at Japan's prestigious Suzuka eight-hour race. The amazing achievement marks the first time the S1000RR has taken the lead in a world championship.

Chris Peris of Team Iron Horse BMW/ESP (Tucson, AZ) lined up on the third row in ninth place for race one at Infineon. It was not the position the team was hoping for, but they were methodically working through different set-ups for the tight, technical track in Sears Point.

The countdown to the opening round of the 2011 IDM series has begun and BMW enthusiasts will have a new face to follow as the German Superbike Championship gets underway at the Lausitzring on April 24.

As part of its preparations for the forthcoming Superstock FIM 1000 Cup, which begins on April 17 at Assen in The Netherlands, the BMW Motorrad Italia Superstock team decided to enter the SSTK support race at the opening round of the CIV Italian Superbike Championship at Misano.

 

A four-man team of Husqvarna riders entered the inaugural Transmoto 12 hour race at Buckenboura in New South Wales and came away with a superb victory, having led this marathon team enduro all day, from start to finish.

It was the opening round of the Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) and Procon Maxima BMW rider Glenn Allerton made history by being the first BMW rider to win an Australian Superbike race.

The termite mound material is akin to concrete and has historically been used as such for building purposes in Western Australia. I knew these mounds were a threat to me as a biker and I was careful not to ride too close, but I never saw this one.

Two Team BMW Husqvarna Motorsport riders are celebrating great results in this year's infamously gruelling Roof of Africa hard enduro event. The 42nd annual race was held in the mountains of Lesotho.

The BMW Motorrad GS Trophy 2010 has reached its conclusion and despite very strong final day challenges Team UK has emerged as the winner. The victory came over Team South Africa with Team Nordic third.

Colorado-based rider Gerry Signorelli may have discovered racing a little later than his competitors, but after his debut season with the BMW S1000RR, he is more than making up for lost time.

A BMW dealer-supported team has won the 2010 Finnish Superbike Championship with its debut season using the S1000RR. The Motomarket dealership from Turku, in the southwest of the country, entered a two-rider team in this year's championship.

Between August 12 and 15, some 35 of South Africa's best GS riders competed for a place to represent their country in the forthcoming BMW International GS Trophy, which will be taking place in November.

The BMW S1000RR has claimed its first national title in the capable hands of Belgian rider Gregory Fastré.
