My BMW two-day off-road riding experience

I have been riding motorcycles since 1974. I moved up to the BMW brand in 2005. I have owned a 1200 GS since 2014 but, never took it off the pavement. I realized I needed training before doing that. I had done the Experienced Rider Course the Alabama Traffic Safety Division offered twice in the past 10 years. I knew it did not prepare me for off road riding.

The two-day off-road riding course at the BMW Performance Center in Greer, SC, was what I needed. It was well organized and taught by an experienced rider. He took time to explain every exercise, answered all our questions and then demonstrated each one before we did them. We experienced all surfaces; gravel, sand, rocks, ruts, hills, camel backs and others. The enduro laps were the most challenging to me. The slow speed and tight turns were tasking.

Our class was small consisting of three individuals. Our background varied as we were originally from Liberia, Germany and Zimbabwe but now all live in the U.S.

It is important to have such training before you engage yourself in these activities. I found my limits and did some things I never thought I could do. These skills will help me avoid injuries to myself and others. I now feel I am in a better position to ride safely and confidently. I can now pick up a dropped bike by myself and can show others how to do it.

This was one of the best use of my time and resources. I wish everyone who owns GS would take this training if you want to get the best use of your bike. Advertising the Paul B Scholarship and the discount BMW MOA members get can help take the sting off the cost of the program.

The amenities at the Performance Center was second to none. Seeing the car drivers doing their thing was great too. Thanks again to the MOA Foundation and the Paul B Scholarship for helping me get this experience, and Vance Harrelson of the BMW Alabama Club for recommending the course and encouraging me to attend.
