Starting in October 2015, many BMW motorcycles can be retrofitted with ABS Pro, which debuted in October 2014 on the HP4 supersport motorcycle.  ABS Pro supports braking in banked positions and is prominent in BMW's Safety 360 program.

The first bikes ABS Pro can be retrofitted on are 2012-14 S 1000 RR sport bikes.  Next up will be RRs for 2015 and 2016; doing so on a 2015 model will include the "Race" riding mode.  ABS Pro is already available as an option for R 1200 GS Adventure and K 1600 GT/GTL motorcycles.

BMW Motorrad deliberately designed the ABS Pro function for use on public roads, where unexpected dangers can always lie in wait. The system provides more safety when braking during cornering.  The ABS Pro system prevents the wheels from locking up even when the rider applies the brakes quickly in a banked position; this reduces abrupt changes in steering force on shock-braking maneuvers and stops the motorcycle from rearing up unintentionally.

Cost for retrofitting ABS Pro or adding it as an option is as follows:

  • 2016 R 1200 GS and GS Adventure, starting at $705
  • HP4, starting at $470
  • 2015 S 1000 RR, starting at $672
  • 2012-14 S 1000 RR, starting at $470

The cost for other bikes will be announced as ABS Pro becomes available for them.

i cannot believe BMW is charging for something that should be free since it just a software update and it is all about safety.
