For many off-road riding enthusiasts, the Dakar Rally is the end-all, be-all measurement of endurance, skill and toughness. Few riders, however, have the time to ride the rally – let alone prepare for it – and lack the funding to live out such a dream.
While the Jimmy Lewis Off-Road Riding School can’t get you down to South America in January, they are offering the fourth annual “Taste of Dakar” experience, a gripping adventure that includes GPS-led routes created by famed Dakar podium holder Jimmy Lewis. Hosted by AltRider, the Pahrump, NV-based ride is scheduled for 13-15 March 2015 and registration is capped at 100 riders.
The desert offers unique riding opportunity for all skill levels of adventure riding enthusiasts, riding that traverses sand dunes, stretches of cracked sand beds, dirt trails winding around scenic valleys and everything in between.
If you feel like you need an off-road refresher course or even a full-on introduction to off-road riding, JLR Off-Road will conduct an add-on one-day class at the AltRider Taste of Dakar event specifically focused on adventure riders and bikes. "We're taking our best drills and skill-improving techniques and delivering them in a single day format so riders can get the most out of their riding weekend," says Jimmy Lewis. Lewis himself teaches the classes with a host of exceptional instructors who make the training very personal.
In addition to two nights of camping at the Wine Ridge RV Resort, riders will be treated to five delicious catered southwestern-style meals, beer and other adult beverages, off-road teaching seminars, a stylish AltRider “Taste of Dakar” t-shirt, and exciting prize giveaways from ICON RAIDEN, one of the event sponsors.
On Friday, choose the optional training class (sold out as of this writing!) with Lewis in the morning or roll into the quaint town of Pahrump for registration before dinner at the campsite. Set up shop for the weekend and enjoy a few drinks before resting up for the next day’s ride.
Saturday, after a hearty breakfast, riders will break up into groups based on skill levels and begin the awesome ride into the desert. Lewis will lead the riders’ meeting and AltRider President Jereme LeBreton will give a brief training seminar. Grab your cameras or Go-Pros and begin your adventure through the stunning mountainscape. There will be at least one gas stop on the route, so most adventure bikes should be good for the day, but riders might consider getting a RotopaX fuel pack for extra security. Halfway through the Saturday ride, we'll stop to enjoy a filling lunch and swap stories from the first part of the day. Ride for the rest of the afternoon with your groups and return (with your new friends and fond memories) from your epic day to a special dinner back at the campsite. If you have time, take a dip at the pool and hot tub at the RV resort.
Wake up to another delicious breakfast on Sunday and break down your campsite for the ride home. Take the optional riding class with Lewis if you’re still thirsty for knowledge or choose a group of friends and take the long way home.
