Does anybody know the designation for the optima battery for the R1150RT or know of a lower cost alternative for the BMW battery?

Yep, I just put a PC-680 in my R1150RS, and you can expect to pay around $120 for it. Under "emergency conditions" (had a road trip to the mountains coming up), my local Batteries Plus actually had one in stock. That one cost a few $$$ more. They must have seen the desperation on my face...

With their $20 coupon, you should have it at your door for about $125. not too shabby.

I did that and, at least with temps below 50 last fall, would very consistently find myself dealing with the ABS low voltage fault on my R1100RT - I think that these batteries - mainly designed for backup power operation (UPS, power failure lighting) seem to have too much voltage drop when cranking. Maybe the 1150RT is more tolerant of this (different ABS system with the servos), but I have had much more consistent service with my PC680. Approaching a year now.

I've had my Universal Battery for two years without any faults. Of course, it doesn't get very cold where I live.
