Safety Straps for R1200RT?
Hi List Members,
By using Google, I arrived at a thread in this forum about safety straps for the R1200RT, but I can't find it by using the "search this forum" command. I thought the thread said that the mirrors on an 09 R1200RT have safety straps inside the mirrors--safety straps that used to have to be obtained in after-market. Is that so? I haven't made it far enough through the manual to find that out yet! Thanks in advance. New RT owner and loving it!

My early-production 2008 RT did not come with the factory safety tethers for the mirrors. But my understanding is that sometime in 2008 the tethers became standard equipment from the factory. So your 2009 RT should be OK in that regard.
(I once found the BMW part number in the online parts fiche - so they're available and retrofittable to earlier 12RT's). |

My '09 RT has them. It's easy enough to check. Just pop the mirror off and look. It should take about 5 seconds. They just mount with short studs through rubber grommets. Grab the mirror and pull towards the rear of the bike and it comes free. That's the reason for the safety tethers in the first place. While you're checking, zip tie your spare plastic key and a spare credit card somewhere in there!

Actually, it's just a generic non-descript spare ATM/Debit card that my bank issues as emergency replacements. No ID on it. I know I should always be able to get a tank of gas, some bacon and eggs, or a bottle of fine tequilla with it! You know, whatever it takes to get back to civilization or make the wait for help bearable.

Don't send your hard earned $$$ on safety straps for the mirrors. I used short pieces of small nylon rope to tether the mirrors.

The OEM rubber retaining straps that came with my bike were easily nicked and eventually broke after removing the tupperware a couple of times. I replaced them with zip ties -- much more durable -- cheaper and easier.

It's always under lock and key here. I knew you guys would give me a hard time. In Missouri, the Castle Doctrine applies, so please don't enter my locked garage hoping to take anything from me. It's unlikely that you would walk out.
You could know it's there and not necessarily locate that key. I've had no issues and refuse to be paranoid. It's a piece of machinery and although I love it, it can be replaced. If somebody wants to steal something from a parking lot, I imagine it wouldn't be that hard. I know I could do it if I were the nefarious sort. If it were stolen, I would hope that I could get on with my life.

Actually I think it is a great idea and far better than my hiding place for the plastic key. Thanks.
