Need New Exhaust

I have a 91K100RS and need to replace the complete system and would like to know if there is another option besides Remus or BMW? I have looked at some used parts but everything I see has already been welded! Any help is appreciated.

StainTune does/did one for the earlier Ks. I think the actually were the source for BMW for a while. Several other brands did them as well, try the search function?

Go back to Stock

Every serious study I've seen shows that optimal performance is achieved using the OE BMW silencer system.

Cheapest way to go as well.

The Staintune exhaust was beautiful, but is no longer available. You can still buy the OEM, but it is extremely expensive, and will break. That leaves Remus, which is almost as nice as Staintune's (which also broke), is readily available, and holds up better than either of the other options.

A new OEM exhaust is much more expensive than a new Remus. Around $1600.

I have an 85 k100rs with a supertrap It has been on there for many years (more than 10) nothing has broken.

What has broken that needs to be welded?

It brakes at the weld junction (where the 4 pipes come together) just prior to the muffler.

After having the stocker welded a few times on my '91 I bought a Remus. At the time (8 years ago?) what I put on was described as the "street" version, the selling dealer said he got comments back from others that it was "too quiet". Perfect for me as I prefer to be stealthy. With a combination of fresh intake rubbers, new exhaust and a controlled throttle hand it returns mpg from the mid to high 40s pretty consistently.

The down side is that while it is indeed not particularly loud (there is another one on the island so I've heard it in passing too) the sound that arrives at my eardrums through the helmet and earplugs (30-33db reduction) is an annoying drone.

Just my $.02

John,

You have put your finger on why owning an older "brick" can be very frustrating. There is a rapidly dwindling amount of aftermarket parts for our bikes.

There are those who enjoy keeping an aging ride going by scouring various sources. I am finding out that I am not. I have been very tempted to come into the 21st century and test ride a new K1300S- but those have their own issues.....

Good luck in your exhaust search.

John

On my K1100RS I had the muffler welded twice and then it cracked again. I said the hell with it and installed a Remus. Sound has never been a big issue with me just as long as it doesn't sound like a Harley Never noticed any power loss or change in gas mileage. It works for me.

Sounds like poor engineering. Either the weak spot needs more support or reinforcing.

Has anyone tried either?

I worked on a project once where we found a certain engine speed caused crazy movement from vibration. Just at one spot on the tach. I think just slightly different mount geometry made it OK. Maybe just an extra bracket, I don't remember for sure. One of the team used strobe photography to document it.

Actually, Harleys sound pretty good OEM. It is the aftermarket exhaust and the throttle-happy riders that make them objectionable.

Exactly, hunting for parts is not my idea of a way to spend my time off. Beemer Bone Yard has an APB on my behalf. I think the problem will surface again though. One writer mentions that there may be an issue at certain rpm's or speeds! This is the source of the problem- speeds of 75-80 there is a vibration. I ride the slab for long distances and when I do...75 is too slow and anything over 80 is great. But the consequences can be expensive.

After I get this repaired I will consider a different bike, maybe a F800ST?

Thanks...

John
