Redmond/Alaska roundabout,2010
Well, I'm turning gears in my mind of the Alaska adventure going to, or leaving from Redmond,Oregon next year
. Anybody else have any similar dreams? I am an avid offroader and ride a GSA'07 and/or KLR650'08. Probably will pick my GSA, even though the new KLR is exceptionally better for the real grit offroad! The GSA makes better speed and carries 9 gallons ...Even if we have different ideas of touring the dirt roads and/or paved up in the far north, we can make some plans for riding together maybe, for some of it! Yes? I plan to ride as much of the NW as possible in two weeks time(both ways, no ferry), from Redmond. Some days will be long, of course but many won't be. I carry camping gear, always but find motels required too when the challenge becomes torture . WOULD be glad to hear from like minded riders on any bike! The ferry may get more consideration later, but I prefer the ride this time. Happy Trails, Randy

I've been toying with the idea of going to Alaska as far as Fairbanks and the Kenau Penn. before riding back down to Redmond for the Rally. Still playing with the plans, but hotels in Alaska makes the most sense to me too.

I lived in Alaska 6 years, rode the ALCAN from Anchorage down and back one summer. If I could take the time off, I would be there. Incredible scenery.

I did all of Alaska in 06. I'm thinking of getting back up to the Cassier after Redmond. I didn't spend enough time in this area and it was some of the best scenery and camping of the whole trip.

Did this trip from Seattle three years ago. It was great. We stayed in a hotel in Fairbanks and did the circle up and back in a very long day. PM me if you have any specific questions.

, or one big one! I'll be interested to read on about others and their do'ins, Thx., Randy

Dust 2 Dawson
Randy,
One of the best things you could do if you are heading north is to take in the Dust 2 Dawson gathering in Dawson City, YT. D2D is a two day gathering of many of the riders in Alaska and the YT, but folks come from all over to attend. It is pretty much just a social gathering. The timing maybe awkward (June 25-26) but you’ll meet many of the folks from Alaska and have a great time. Checkout the Alaska regional forum on ADV Rider (http://www.advrider.com/forums/forum...aysprune=&f=68) for more info on D2D.

Thank you David;
I'll keep it noted! I get the month of July off work, so my trip revolves around that month. I'm out of Central CA., so I'm on the right coast to get the most of a month up there
. Stay in touch everybody riding North of the Border this summer, around our National Rally. I'll be here, talk'in it up . Randy

Ride to Alaska fm Nebraska
I am wanting to head off to Alaska on my 2008 R1200RT this coming summer. Accomplishing a trip to Alaska will be a long held dream come true. To think I wanted to do the trip on a bicycle a bunch of years ago. What is the best month to go? I had thought about leaving from Redmond but I think I will go either before the Redmond Rally or after which will put my trip into early August. I am a paved road guy who camps to save funds, but still likes to get a good shower every few days. Looking forward to more comments on this thread.

Mid June until mid Aug are your best month, best weather! of course you can travel before and after with out any problems.
Lots of camp sites open at this time of the year so you wont have problems with your shower. Most roads are paved these days but construction can be a problem in the wet. Bugs can be bad at certain times of the year and Bears are around in most places. Imho, going up after the interNational in Redmond would make the most sense. You can do a round trip "kinda sorta" if you go up the Stewart-Cassiar and down the Alaska Hyway. Martin.

Very good;
Me too, wanting to ride all the way to the north shore
. I guess the Haul Road above Fairbanks. Thanks the the B.C. kindness, regarding camping . I'll be glad to talk more and love the campout routine, with a room thrown in here and there. The after Redmond may be the ticket for me, but lots of time to consider options around Redmond, as this is a certain appearance for me. I have ridden as far as Mt Robson North, with no more time to go further. I will this coming Summer, do all of it. Keep this open. GSA1200'07, Randy

Randy,
This has been a dream of mine, and I have the time this summer. I'll be starting in Santa fe, NM. I prefer motels, but would be prepared to camp if necessary. I spoke to a couple guys this summer who said they took their camp gear, but did,nt use it once. I'll keep this thread open. Paul Kaufman Santa fe, NM |
