Basic Dumb Question III
My Good Friends:
Please refer to Basic Dumb Question, and Basic Dumb Question II for background.
I did this experiment three times. Replaced the Rhinewest EPROM chip with the stock chip, put it all together, and each time the stock chip was up to bat the fuel pump ran on and it would not fire. Each time the Rhinewest chip was up to bat the pump timed out in a couple of seconds and the bike fired.
Many thanks to PGlaves for confirming that the Motronic assembly does in fact control the fuel pump timing on initial key on. By the way, Mr. Glaves writes great articles for our little BMW publication, and is very generous with his considerable technical knowledge.
Many thanks to BMWMick for suggesting that I look at Beemerboneyard for a used Motronic.
Got one. ($200 vice $797 if new)
Put it in.
It fired right up.
I have not been on my bike in 2006. But this weekend is looking good.
This all started over the surge issue, and I will discuss my thoughts on the R259 in a later post after some experimentation. That will be called 'Surging Tsunami II'.
I will probably notice the loss of the extra pop I got from the Rhinewest chip right away, but hey, can't have it all.
Once again, many thanks for the input from all ... this is a great forum. ~ Les
