Is this light supposed to come on as a bulb test when I turn on the ignition?
It's not doing so, and I can't remember if it ever was. Just curious, I'd like to know that the bulb works since the fans seem to die a lot.

The bulb never comes on unless the bike is overheating.Jeff Dunkle has an excellent diagnostic for this at IBMWR.org, and gives a technique to jumper across the connector pins of the cooling fan relay to check the bulb. I've used it and it works great.
