    Covered Bridges

We'll have a loop ride or two of covered bridges; if I remember correctly, you can get 15 bridges in one loop not all that far from the rally site. Watch for an article on this in an upcoming ON . . . hasn't been submitted yet, so it will be a while. www.vtbmwmov.org has a listing of the bridges and associated towns under Rides if you want to start checking them out now. The Covered Bridge Society has a nice book they publish; I can get more information on that if anyone is interested.

This years lead up to the Rally will provide ON articles anyone in New England/New York should archive for years. It's enough to keep even the most jaded on board for another year.

I've attached waypoints for most of the bridges in VT for those of you who like to use GPS. There are 3 formats, Garmin db2 (GDB), old Garmin (MPS), and GPS exchange (GPX). I've also included the dealers and BMW service places in the area.

    Enjoy!

    Northeast Covered Bridges

I liked this site. It brings up a page of thumbnails. Then if you see one you like you can click it to find more info including location and sometimes GPS coordinates.

A good tour has already been done and we'll be sure to repeat it -- It covers a lotta covered bridges (!) mostly in NW Vermont...I'll be sure we're all set up with Muriel and get the infor out.

The boat launch at Lake Carmi was launching four wheel drives and wheellers. Perch were biting. Coffee, croissonts and covered bridges were down the road, it called, I went.

Off the Ice, south on 236, east on 105, east/south on 118, south on 109, south on 108, west on 15, west on 104, south on 128 and again west on 15 to rally, mostly. I knew where I had been, vistors might want to save Vermonters from telling and the embarassment of asking, by getting one of those map books. Two good ones are Delorme, Vermont Atlas & Gaztteer, and Northern Cartographic's Vermont Road Atlas and Guide.

The first Covered bridge crossed was:

    Hopkins http://www.virtualvermont.com/covere...e/hopkins.html
    Longley http://www.virtualvermont.com/covere...e/longley.html

Many small roads are not yet constrained by pavement. A visit to the Creamery Bridge Http:http://www.virtualvermont/coveredbri.../westhill.html and West Hill Cemetery tell a lot of what Vermont was, and now is.

    Fuller http://www.virtualvermont.com/coveredbridge/fuller.html
    Hutchins http://.www.virtualvermont.com/cover.../hutchins.html

Good luck finding the Hectorville Bridge http://www.virtualvermont.com/covere...ctorville.html it's being saved, creek is still there.

Need Coffee? Always worth a visit Foothill Bakery is located at the four corners in Fairfax. Amy Bell the Owner, chef, etc creates croissonts, breads, soups, and sandwichs that make me stop anytime I go by. And I've lingered more than once to listen to the Foothill Fogeys music in their get togethers.
Grab a cup of coffee and Raspberry scone and visit the Lower Fairfax bridge http://www.virtualvermont.com/covere...e/lowerfx.html just across the road.
Two loafs of amadam bread and half a dozen cranberry scones stuffed in the 'stich' and it's down the road to the Brown's River bridge http://www.virtualvermont.com/coveredbridge/weston.html

Just past the first stoplight you get to, is Franks Motorcycle Sales. http://www.franksmotorcyclesales.com Lester and Jennette are vermont only BMW dealer. I stopped by and fondled the new k1200s, HP2 and a R100RT, got some tips on making my Guzzi G5 handle better, and concluded with Lester that putting the docks in with 50 dgree water in June is far less painfull that taking them out in 50 degree water on Election day.

Well, the Rally is right down the road a bit, and if you left Lake Carmi at Sunrise you would have the rest of the morning to roust those beer drinking, band rockers that had three too many. Me, I'm off to visit round barns...........

    Nice ride report, Raven!

A cautionary note on the Creamery Bridge to riders: The approach to the bridge can be gnarley, and you can't ride across the bridge as it's blocked off. The approach is a downhill curve, blocked at the bottom. The road, when I was there, was rutted and had loose gravel on the downhill part, so park on the level part of the road before the downhill and walk down (couple hundred yards) - unless you are a GSer or otherwise adept at riding gnarley roads.

The Creamery Bridge was a gotcha bonus on the Green Mountain 400. Two of our scouts rode to the bridge on their Goldwings and were not too happy.

In other words, listen to the lady from Vermont, she knows of what she speaks.

BMWPhreak or anyone else who've used Garmin unit:

Thanks for posting very informative gps listing. Do you know a way I can import select waypoints from your listing in VT_Rally.gdb into my current database? I tried to push into the unit and then retrieve it, but doing that it not only retrieved all, but it truncates to some like 10 characters. I'd like to keep case sensitive titles, along with any address info that went in as well.

I am using Garmin 2610 device.

    Thanks.

    Montauk,

The GPS listing I posted was made with a Garmin 2610 so you should be able to open my file. Go to the waypoints section and highlight all of the waypoints. (Ctrl-A) Then copy them (Ctrl-C). Next, open the desired file you want to save them in and go to the Waypoint section in that file and paste the waypoints (Ctrl-V). If you can't get it to work, send me your file and I'll put the waypoints in for you and send it back.

    Awesome

That was a cool trick. I was able to Copy selected Covered Bridges (not all) and paste in my file. Thanks bud.

I've so far created 3 trips, one of them using info from BMWMOA magazine, while other based on some reading.

My round trips times are 2.5 hrs, 6hrs, 4.5 hrs. I am not sure what should be the realistic times should be. 6 hours is to go to Island Pond, don't really know what's there, but BMWMOA suggested the route plan.

I am also intrigued by someone suggesting making a trip to Maine for great lobster.

    Thanks again BMWPhreak.
