I picked up a '94 K1100RS last week. The bike has about 78k miles and was in storage for a couple of years. Installed a new battery a few days ago. All lights, horn, turn signals, flashers work when the ignition switch is on. The bike does have the security alarm but has been disconnected. Side stand is retracted as it should be. The starter button does not activate the starter relay, with clutch in or out. I have tested the relay and it is good, I have been able to start the engine by removing the black/yellow and brown wires from the relay and testing with a nine volt battery. The starter activates like it should. The engine runs just fine.
Cleaned the contacts at the relay, both ends of the wiring harness, and disassembled the starter switch and cleaned the contacts with aerosol contact cleaner. Everything is bright and shiny, but still no joy when using the starter switch. I do need to clean the side stand switch as a matter of course. The question is what should be tested next? It has been suggested to test the voltage attenuation between the switch and the relay, but I don't see that there are any other relays in the system. What should the ohm reading be in the wiring between the starter switch and the relay. -Mike
