Rollin' by THE GREAT RIVER ROAD to the MOA RALLY... Join the Ride!

Rollin' by The Great River Road to the MOA Rally.

    Concept:
Riders joining a tour of the Great River Road near the mouth of the Mississippi River in route to the MOA Rally in St Paul MN.
The tour begins Saturday, July 19 in Baton Rouge LA with planned night stops in/near Clarksdale Ms, Ste Genevieve MO., Fort Madison Iowa, Dubuque Iowa and St Paul MN on July 23rd. Each day will be about 300-350 miles. There will be planned Lunch stops as well each day at the suggestion of local hosts.

This is not a group ride, riders may join the tour at any location. We will suggest Motel locations, meeting points such as lunch and dinner locations and routes. We will seek MOA members to be hosts for each stopover, these hosts will suggest in advance motel location and dinner locations. Each hosts can secure support from other members and dealers to offer a visit, coffee and snacks at dealer locations when feasible.

There will not be a registration fee or any form of competition, this is a social gathering of like minded members who would enjoy the history and ride along the Great Mississippi River and The Great River Road in route to the MOA rally. Each riders will progress at their own pace and we will only suggest routes, motel, lunch and dinner locations.

Riders may join the tour at any location, likewise riders may join just for lunch or dinner to meet other riders and learn about BMW MOA and membership opportunities. This would be like a RTE (Ride to EAT) or RTM (Ride to Meet) event.

We have a host couple for Baton Rouge, La. we seek hosts (members that live near the night stop or familiar with local area) that will assist in recommending a location for night "dutch treat" dinner and breakfast location nearby. Host would suggest a motel and perhaps a campground nearby. Host can secure other members to assist as co-hosts, secure local information, maps and etc.

I will provide suggest routes via GPX format, listed host selected motels and lunch and dinner locations will be listed here in the official Great River Road thread.

So, join for the entire ride or just a few days, join at any point or just join other riders during one of the lunches or dinner locations. We explore the offerings of the Great River Road such as Ferry crossings, National Park locations, local history, Mississippi Blue Trails markers, great places to taste the great food selections and the rich history of the mighty Mississippi River.

More information to follow...we are working with the rally chairs to provide support for this ride to the rally.

We need some hosts to help coordinate this event along the river. It is not hard and we'll help you! If you live in or near any of the areas listed above and would like to help riders headed up the river (not up the creek...up the river!), let Norwood know at the email listed above!

Questions??? Let us know! This will be a great opportunity to meet some new riders and have blast riding to the rally!

Vance, I live in Marion, Ar., just across the river from Memphis, Tn.; both cities being on the Great River Road. I would be willing to advise anyone on riding either side of the river in this area heading north to the National. Old Man River plays a big part in the history and geography of this area. The greatest American maritime tragedy/atrocity with loss of life happened just out side of Marion on the Miss. River. The sinking of the SS Sultana with the loss of over 1700 lives in 1865 is a almost totally unknown disaster in American history.

If I were specifically running the Great River Road, I would ride to the southern end on Highway 23 to Triumph or Venice. Neat experience,as the road runs between two large levees all the way down to the end. Those folks that live there live a unique lifestyle. I'm a Civil War buff, so a stop at Fort Jackson would be a must. Don't miss this part of the Great River Road.

Sunday route suggestion will take riders on a choice of Western route via Marion or Eastern Route via Memphis and NE toward Reelfoot.

Good info about SS Sultana, think if my history is correct, it was overshadowed by the assassination of Lincoln within a few days??

If you could give me a location of the historical marker in Marion for SS Sultana, I add as Waypoint...

Tentative lunch plan on Sunday is around Reelfoot lake area...from Marion riders can cross MS River on I55,

Hope you can make the ride or a lunch or dinner.....more details as we move forward.

    Thanks
