Before you get 50 different answers...it's your money. Buy what you want. They are both very good moto's.

Bought a new model, first year 1995 BMW GS1100. Loved it for 97000miles, BUT will not buy another 1st year BMW anything! Although the bike was to my liking and did about everything swell, the engine was NOT perfect in any way... Always had issues with pinging/detonation issues...You buy a 1st year, not proven model and buyer BEWARE. Its your turn to be BMWs "guinea pig"! Been there done that. You MAY consider waiting until BMW has at least a couple years with the new GS in public. Watch. Randy
I AM VERY happy with my current 2007 GSA1200 at near 100000m now and what a bike. Forgot to mention I still go GSAs. I've had a long line of'em. I bought my current '07GSA1200, Feb.'08, so 5 years in now, ALL SWEET...Randy
OK, the Waterhead is here and alot of us have sat on it at the shows and maybe at the dealers by now?
I thought about the bike and can admit to lusting over this new waterhead platform in GS and RT form.
My question is: Where/What can you imagine where/what BMW can go and do with this class leading engine/chassis combo?
What wishlist class leading features, or attributes can you forsee for the GSA, RT, R, ST or something totally new?
Since I am an RT guy....I wish to see a super slick aero package (for mpg) with cold/hot tuneable ambient temp packages. More adjustability in seating position/footpegs/bars. Maybe a full option package for the low suspension models? A more comfortable seat but I am not holding my breath. The stiffer chassis should help handling. Electronics should help to. Better braking is always desired. An end to the final drive issues. A more intergrated robust luggage system. Maybe the trunk could slide forward for RT or GS solo riders? Improved switchgear. Better visibility all around. Longer maintainance intervals for sure.
Do we know yet what the intervals are?
Let the lust begin but I do admit I will wait 3 or 4 years before purchasing so the aftermarket can catch up. Also for the typical time lag for refinement by BMW of newly introduced models.

Gents,
I completely agree on never buy a first year anything. Thats why I waited to buy my 2012 Ford Powerstroke that was re enginieered for 2011.
I have been looking at the Triumph 1200 Explorer too....shhhhhhh. 10k mile service intervals on the Triumph....6k on the new Beamer. They have been testing this thing over seas for over a year....and it is German???

See what I mean? As an aside, I've had 2 first month models ('02 1150RT and april '04 1200GS. Put 40k on both of them with ZERO problems.
Now please re-read my earlier post.

Don't know what kind of rider you are, but, if you decide to go with the new waterboxer, you're covered for 3 years 36,000 miles. You'll know by one of those intervals whether it's a keeper, or not.
kltk165,
Thanks....I did not know that. I was starting to swing back towards the '12 but that may swing me back. I ride hard....this is why I like a GS over a GSA. Lighter and more nimble. I am interested in the additional torque and hp of the new design. Here in the twisties of Western NC a GS is the perfect machine. I am sure BMW has tested and tested this machine before letting it hit the street.
Thanks Gents...
