option...you would have a button on left controls with ASC on it.

Since you have an '08 - you have the option to retrofit it. Retail cost is around $800 or so.. but some dealers will help you out with price, and you can install it without replacing the left switch assembly if you never want to switch it off (I can't imagine why one would want to switch it off unless you get stuck in snow a lot on your motorbike..)
There were some threads/discussion about this a number of years ago, here and on the R1200R forum on www.r1150r.org. Details and parts (and computer enabling code) are discussed. Unfortunately - the early '07 R12R can't be retrofitted (which is how I know a bit about it.. we tried to..)
