It would appear that one of the bolts mounting the luggage racks also holds the rear shock in place. Any body installed said racks with out the shock reacting like a "jack in the box"? Will raising the frame so that he rear wheel is off the ground do the trick?

Just curious...any pictures? What type of luggage rack is it?

to be honest, i'm not really sure what you are asking. "jack in the box"?

however, if you're questioning what happens when you unbolt a shock (top or bottom) - if you've placed the bike on c-stand, it pretty much just dangles free. do one side at a time, and you don't even have to worry about effort to realign things. is a very easy one person job.

Thanks bikerfish. What I needed. "Jack in the box" is what the front fork springs do when you remove the top nut without precaution.

shock with spring is fully contained until disassembled (which you won't be doing), whereas springs in fork tubes are "disassembled" upon opening top cap.
