    R1100GS Gear Position Switch

There are 2 switches at the back of the transmission for this 1996 R1100GS: one is the neutral switch and the other is the gear position switch. The gear position switch is old and crumbling, but is it really needed?

This bike does NOT have a Rider Information Display. From the schematic, I cannot see any use for the gear position switch except reporting to a RID.

A new switch is slightly north of $100. Does anyone know of its actual need?

The only purpose that switch serves, is to provide the RID with gear information.
The neutral switch is a start interlock as you probably know.

I don't know exactly what you're dealing with but I'd make sure the crumbling gear indicator switch doesn't mess up the neutral switch.

    Thanks, Mike.

The gear switch is broken, and I will not be replacing it. I will use the damaged carcass to cover and seal the neutral switch, but it will not be connected.
