The Run 'n' Lites use a brake/taillight bulb. (I can't recall the number just now, but it's the two-filament type). If I wish to install LED bulbs, are they available in the (required) amber color? I haven't found any yet.

Here you go.

When you find your bulb requirement, check superbrightleds for the light.
My understanding is that the flasher unit will not operate (properly) with the LED bulbs. A work-around is adding a resistor in the turn signal wiring. They make 1157 type LED's (which is the Run-N-Lites bulb type).
I have been considering putting 1157 LED's in my front running light/turn signal sockets (in the fairing), but recognize a 50 watt resistor is needed in the wiring. Ten watts can be saved from the standard 1157's and the bulbs last a really long time, but I probably won't make the conversion. However, Rear Run-N-Lites are still a possibility with standard 1157's.
Edit: I think the rear running lights (technically) should be red, depending on the individual state DMV regulations.

I do not see anything in the Run 'N' Lites website that addresses LED lights. Can you direct me to it?
I know what type incandescent bulbs are needed. I'm looking for LEDs to reduce the electrical load on my old bike. She's still able to run my heated grips and jacket liner without killing the battery, but I know the reserve capacity of the charging system is growing small, hence the search of LEDs.
I've located red LEDs that are the proper spec for use in the front Run 'N' Lites, but I've heard that they will still appear red when they shine through the orange indicator lens -- which is not good.
As an aside, the LEDs will work in turn indicators without resisters but they cycle on/off faster. This may be contrary to the law in some places, but I've never had any "chats" with authority types due to this.
You can get an electronic flasher that will allow LED's to work without a resistor.
Look here: http://www.superbrightleds.com/searc...bulbs/flasher/
And it is 'technically' illegal to run amber running lights on the rear of a vehicle. A very nice female Wisconsin State Trooper informed me of that many years ago. Gave me an equipment violation warning. One stop in 15 years of running that combination, I believe it was Priority Lights back then.
Thanks for that link, Bob!
I would be interested in which combination of LED's and flasher(s) would work with an Airhead from superbrightleds.com. I could not figure it out. The stock BMW flasher requires a load resistor and so do most replacement flashers. Personally, I consider flashers and lighting a safety item so reliability is important and not something for experimentation - but that's just me.
Below is a link from superbrightleds.com with three pages of 1157 substitute LED modules. Most can be found in amber.

Check this thread on ADVRider: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showt...superbrightLED
Yes, I have read that thread. I understand the LED choice (although, that may not be mine), the signal relay is a Kasan electronics Signal Minder SM-6. The Kasan unit operates the turn flashers and works with LED's. Also, the SM-6 is listed for K-bikes. Do airheads have the same electrical pinouts for turn signals as K's?

For me, the adventure rider thread raises more questions than it answers and does not use the electronic flashers at superbrightleds.com. I also read about alternate turn signal relays at Snowbums site and adventure rider, both as a part swap for the OEM flasher and newer technology electronic units. It is unclear which electronic flasher relays work with both LED's and can be wired for airheads. Once upon a time, Joe Cuda had a relay article on the airheads website but that is gone. It makes sense that a modified relay (similar to the Kasan SM-6) or an electronic one from superbrightleds.com can work, but the details are not clear (to me).

Take another look at the Run-N-Lites product page.

The 2nd item down is the Lite-Buddy. This is an LED insert that fits inside the Airhead turn signal pod and provides either red or amber running lights.
