I strongly suggest you play a Martin Backpacker before buying one. I did not, and I was not happy with the sound quality. In fact, I have one for sale, at a reduced price, played once.

As for the Hofner shorty my buddy lent me, I will not be buying one. I've only had about 1/2hr to mess around with, but how much time is required to realise that you do not like the sound.
The balance is better than I expected... for an inexpensive Chinese built guitar, it has nice fit and finish, but I just do not like the way it sounds.
I will try a different set up (I buying a Fender Blues JR), and see if that makes any difference, but I am not optimistic...it is what it is and you get what you pay for (around $150 new).
My wife thinks it's eally cute!
