anyone try the non-OEM peanut valve covers?

Yes, I have a pair installed on my R100, '77 .

Excellent fit and finish, very happy with it.

Mating surface was flat (<<.002),

I bought the ones without the studs as I used my own screws to hold it to the head. Those on evil-bay appear to have the stud.

I like them much more than the black painted covers from the factory.

Have you checked at Airhead Salvage?

MaxBMW shows them for $111...even shows some "blemished" ones for $80. BMW Hucky's for about the same.
