    Stupid Oil Change Questions

Hi all: I'm the recent purchaser of an '01 R1150GS. I have a couple of questions as the 42k service is soon due.

Do I actually need the BMW oil filter wrench, or is there a way around it? If so, I need to get it ordered soon as the nearest dealer is 275 miles away.

I'm assuming this machine doesn't have a wet clutch? In other words, fully synthetic oil in the engine and transmission are ok?

Thanks everyone, I've learned a lot from this forum. gary

If you've already got a new filter to install, take it over to your local auto parts store and ask for a filter wrench that fits. You'll probably get away for just a couple bucks. And, yes, synthetic oil is more than just OK for your bike, especially since it's broken in. Just remember that the transmission is separate from the engine, and takes a gear lube, not engine oil. There are other posts around the forum as to the favorite flavor of synthetic oils, so look around. Questions are always welcome.

Thanks! I just ordered the oil filter 'kit' which comes with the crush washer and also crush washers for the transmission and rear drive. I'll use synthetic oil/grease. I appreciate your input. This forum is great for us newbies! gary
