    Transmission rebuild

Not wanting to put the membership on the spot, but looking for some input. Tom C., Oak, Ted P., and Anton L. are very well respected individuals and have outstanding reputations in the industry. I plan on having my LS transmission gone thru by one of them. Has any of the membership had experience with aforementioned as it relates to a transmission rebuild?

    Oak

My understanding is that Oak isn't currently doing machine/rebuild work.

That said, I don't think anyone would suggest that you can go wrong by using any of the other 3 mentioned. These ARE the gurus, and they each are deserving of the name.

Now, that said, there are many excellent independents to choose from, and many of them can do a great job on a tranny rebuild - I'm sure the faithful will weigh in with specifics.

+1 Walking Eagle. I had Oak do my trans several yrs ago, but wouldn't hesitate on any of the other 3 by their reputations!

if you got time to wait, then any of those guys I would trust 100%
if your in a hurry, like now, like right now,
well..... call them and tell them you need it right now and money no object
but like I said, if you can wait any of them will do great
if your in the northwest, another person is steve prokov
but this time of year, its not gonna be a two day turn around
    again, unless money no object
I bet anyone will do it wiht a statment like that....money no object

If you send it to Tom C., get ready to wait a LONG time. Months. Many months. And don't expect touchy feely service, friendly emails, and good communication.

I had TC send me back my transmission. I sent it to Ted Porter. They gave me a time line estimate and adhered to that estimate. Ted runs a real, professional, brick and mortar business with good communication and customer service.

    Me, I'd go to Ted.

    here's another name for you

    Guenther Wuest
    Fredericksburg Indiana
    1-812472-3739

personally I would either use Guenther or Anton. Guenther knows his stuff and I've used him before and was very pleased. Of course Anton is top notch too.

I know Anton and Guenther do all the work themselves, not sure about Tom Cutter or Ted Porter, they might have one of the guys in the shop do it.

of course your geographic location could be a consideration for speed of shipment, but that'd be only a few days. But lesser distance would mean cheaper shipping.

Tom Cutter is a one-man operation.

I know folks that have had Re-Psycle BMW do their transmission re-build.

I chose to do my own re-build. I consulted with Oak and Re-Psycle, and watched the video from Cycle Works. My results were very successful. I was able to borrow the BMW shim tool from my local BMW dealer (subsequently I've obtained my own tool).

Local service shop in Saint Louis called Forever Endeavor, that also sells Urals, has done excellent work for me. Their website http://www.abcbmw.com/

    Transmission Service

The gearbox in my 1983 R100RS is doing fine, knock wood. However, as the miles pile up, I'll need service sooner or later. Has anyone had experience with Motor Works Pro Machining? That shop advertises in Airmail and the prices are well below what I typically see offered. The address is in National City, California.

Ted Porter does excellent work but I think their time quotes are in dog years.

My experience is that completion dates (heads, gear box) did not match projections well at all.

Still, I think Porter does things right and his experience is worth the wait.
