    BMW Welt in Munich

My son will be travelling to Munich for a few days this fall and will be staying at a hotel located a few blocks from BMW Welt (BMW World). He has owned BMWs autos and is interested in touring the museum. Excuse my ignorance, but does anyone know if Motorrad products are part of the museum displays?

    Thanks!

Their web site mentions a motorcycle exhibit. I need to go there since I have both a BMW auto and a motorcycle.

Yes, and drilling down on the BMW Welt website link above gets you
    http://www.bmw-welt.com/web_rb/bmw-w...otorcycle.html
Note this is the BMW Museum exhibit, across the pedestrian overpass from BMW Welt building. BMW Welt usually has a much smaller bike exhibit, although occasionally they do highlight displays of new models.

If your son is also interested in gorging on new car and/ or bike models, the main
corporate car & bike showrooms are not far from BMW Welt, on Frankfurter Ring,
    http://www.bmw-muenchen.de/de/nl_muenchen/de/index.html
    and
    http://www.muenchen.bmw-motorrad.de/.../de/index.html

Another option is the separate "BMW Classic" car & bike collection facility,
    http://www.bmwclassic.de/2/PDF/20090113_Eventflyer.pdf,
over on Schleissheimer Strasse. That one usually requires a special guided tour
reservation, but your son might luck out by dropping by the facility or calling ahead.

I've been to the Welt and the museum after it was redone a few years ago -- lots of bike stuff. One of the first things you encounter is a 4-5 story wall of glass covering row upon row of just about every significant motorcycle, from basement to ceiling. Lots of other motorrad "stuff" as well.

    TERRIFIC INFO!!!!

Thanks to all. I will be forwarding these links to my son. He is very interested in the autos and I will be guilting him into taking many photos of the bikes. I think he'll also be interested in visiting the "BMW Classic" collection since it is so nearby.

Waiting another couple of years to visit the area myself...

    Thanks!

If he contacts them a few weeks before hand, he might be able to get a factory tour

(No...) If he's in Munich, the car factory tour does not require contact
a few weeks before hand. The Munich car factory tour is usually available same
day, or by calling a day ahead at most:
    http://www.bmw-welt.com/web_rb/bmw-w...tory_tour.html
    or
    http://www.bmw-werk-muenchen.de/lowb.../en/index.html

The bike factory tour in Berlin usually requires much more advance contact/ reservation, but even that not necessarily.

I've been at the Munich facility and have read the little sign that says "We are sorry, but requests for factory tours should be made in advance". That is all I know.

Hello Court, I regret to report to you that 36654 is indeed correct. A dozen of us from AZ Beemers Club #89 toured the BMW Welt on Tuesday, August 14 in Munich. The sign that 36654 mentions was prominently displayed and when we inquired about the factory tour we were told we should have scheduled a few weeks before hand. We AZB do not know if this is new policy or not. Here are the photographs from Bill Fitkowski of our BMW Welt day tour:

    All Things BMW

Yesterday after breakfast we hopped onto the bus downtown and hopped off the bus at BMW Welt ....

Over in Germany the drinking of the BMW Koolaid starts at a very young age ...

The girl was pretty bummed that she had to wait for her turn.
Here is Don extolling the virtues of BMW to Tom ...

Pam is not so sure she wants to ride on the back of that contraption.
Some of you may not know that BMW is now involved with Rolls Royce ...

As Don's shirt points out this was the fastest motorcycle at the time ....

I rode Huskys for a lot of years and now BMW owns Husqvarna (at least the motorcycle division). Here is the Paris to Dakar bike...

We were going to go over to the museum but I wanted to check out some of the other Huskys when we heard a bike being fired up inside the building ....

The rider then entertained the crowd by riding up and down the stairwells inside of BMW Welt ....

On the final decent he would do a stoppy (up on the front wheel only) while going down. I told Don I could do that, just not on purpose.
Once the show was over it was time to head over to the BMW Museum ....

One of the first bike displays was this very nice unit ....

Further along we came across one of the BMW road racers ....

I was actually a little more interested in this 750cc ISDE bike that I first saw live coming across the field near Brioude France in 1980 when I was over with the Canadian ISDE Team in a support role ....

With Don as my monkey we wouldn't have any problems with the right-handers ....

There were also a number of cars of racing heritage on display ....

The power plant from the 2005 BMW F1 car ....

Another race car from 1961 ....

Don needs to explain this one to me ....

I don't think Don is going to fit ....

These were the last two vehicles on display as you leave the museum. A GT and a Prototype racer. Very cool cars ....

    Don,
Great report & pix. I'm always ready to stand corrected by current experience.
Don't know either when "few weeks" advance res became policy. Now...somebody
might ask BMW corp to make this policy prominently "CLEAR" on their
    websites.
