Having twice, now, been stuck behind a sluggish motor home on CA 1 north of Fort Bragg as it corkscrews from the coast, through the redwoods toward US 101, I was tipped off to a very pleasant alternate route through the (former) town of Branscomb.

Turned out to be a very pleasant 30 or so miles inward from the Mendocino Coast.
