"I have 40 litre side cases and a 55 litre top box."

I am assuming that this is the size of the three cases that come standard on the 1100RT. Is that correct? Does anyone know of, or have added, a rack to the top of the rear case. Does BMW sell one?

I also thought that you could buy larger lids for the standard side cases to increase their volume. Is that right, or do you have to re-buy both complete, larger, cases?

    Case rack

I put a Wunderlich rack on the 49L top case of my R1200 RT. works fine.

You should be able to buy the wide lids for your bags.
As for putting gear on top of your topcase, I wouldn't put anything heavier than thermarest up that high. I think the size of the standard 1100RT topcase is 33 liters. Side cases are 31 and 32 liters.

Caribou side cases and givi top box. The top box has a rack that I occasionally strap something light to, like a bike cover.

even putting anything heavy into the top case itsef should be avoided, as you do not want weight up high, period.

95% of the time we have been 2-up camping for the last 18 years. My 1100gs is like a truck when comes to hauling what we need. We are setting a 1150rt up for a two week trip to Canada later this year, so heres what I figured out, We each a saddle bag( she gets the bigger one), tank bag for maps , caps, flashlights, first-aid kit, purse or any little thing you might need to get in a hurry. Tools under the seat. Two dry bags on the rack ( trunk is to small for any thing), one has our thermorest, sleeping bags, and pillows. The other bag contains the tent and ground cloth and two kermit chairs. Will have a small dry bag bungie buddyed on top of each saddle bag. Back packing gear and pack your cloths in two gallon ziplock bags and sit on them to remove the air. Have fun!

Don't forget the chase car. Or truck.
Many group riders always have along a chase vehicle. We kept getting in front of, then behind a group of about 25 Harleys, with a good 5 or ten women passengers, in Death Valley last year.
They had a tail, a green SUV. Seems like I was the only one who realized it was their chase car.
One of the BMW guys had to ask, 'why do they need a chase car?'

My wife and I enjoy camping 2 up on our R1100RT. We first tried using a U-Bag, which was fine except that it prevented her from finding and reaching the grab handles as easily as she likes. Now we use the setup in this photo. We each get one side case for our own stuff. We use different size Helen2Wheels' waterproof bags, strapped to the top of each side case. The smaller bag holds our 3 person tent, the larger bag holds 2 Big Agnes air mattresses and one sleeping bag we share as a cover (the bag will hold much more if we need it). What helps makes this work for us is the Rok straps which hold the Helen2Wheels bags to the side cases. Because the straps are partially stretchy, you don't have to tighten them so hard, so we easily create a space where my wife can still reach the grab handles easily, and the straps still hold the bags tightly. We like the Givi trunk because it holds all the light stuff that we access frequently during the day, like fruit and snacks, and because it has the Admore LED lighting kit on the back and sides, and that makes us very visible from the rear. Even fully loaded, handling is great because all the weight is down low.
