    EEK!
That's what mine was doing today. I've never noticed it before, but today, it did not want to downshift from 3rd to 2nd, and 2nd to first...
We'll have to see. Maybe it was a bad day that way.

Do it soon. If the transmission shafts wears it will cost you somewhere north of $1000 if you pull the transmission yourself, and more if the shop does it.

Agreed. I would handle it sooner, rather than wait. Then the bike will shift smoothly and you'll not have to worry about it.

Can you explain to me how a lack of lube on the splines impedes the downshift?
I would think it would be a clutch issue.....
Edit---These are the clutch splines? yes?
But I don't wanna tear the bike in two.......

What sort of time is involved in a preventative spline lube?

The first time I did a spline lube, it took all weekend. Now I can do one in 6 to 8 hours depending on whether I remove the paralever from the transmission or leave it attached.

Sure! When the pressure plate is moved forward away from the clutch disk by pulling the clutch lever the disk is still in contact with the other side of the sandwich, called the clutch cover. The clutch disk needs to be able to freely slide forward a little bit so it is no longer in contact with the clutch cover. Otherwise, some torque (turning the shaft) is still being transferred to the transmission from the engine.

When the clutch hub splines are dry and rusty or worn the disk does not slip easily away from the clutch cover and remains in contact, transmitting torque to the transmission and causing difficult down shifts.

    Thanks! That helps.
I had the bike out for 100 miles today. Was driving freeway and mountain roads, less city, and I had no problems with the downshifts. I'm hoping it was driver error on the previous glitches. At any rate, I'm gonna wait, this bike has had too many maintenance items for now.

In retrospect, it has not been that bad. They were all deferred maintenance items on a bike new to me. It has been pretty much a tune-up, fluids changed, I gave it new bosch plugs, which helped, tires (pr3), rear rotor and pads and Speigler brake lines.
It has obviously been a bit neglected, none of the items so far has been incredibly unusual, ...but it has been an awful thing to do them all within 2 months.
Bike ran pretty well today. I added some Techron to the gas, the BMW seems to like the stuff.

I wish I could explain it, but the after the lube was done it slips into gears now. The only issue I still have is pilot-error. I sometimes hit a "false neutral" between 2nd and 3rd gears.
