    ilium highway pegs

    Does anyone have these? Opinions?

Seems (from looking at the pictures) that the foot position might be kind of hot around the valve covers. Is that so?

    Ilium Road Pegs

I have had them on my RT for over a year. They give your legs a break on longer rides. I have had no problem from heat. Mine are installed on the Wunderlich engine bars. Chi

I have them and there is no heat problem but they really aren't that comfortable on an RT. My legs are too splayed apart and the fairing digs into my calves. I rarely use them. They are good for only a few minutes for me.

I think it would be easier to answer that question if we knew what bike you were considering them for...

Please read: http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showthread.php?t=46055 - I can easily see the heat (or lack of) problem being different between different models of hexheads..

On an RT there is no problem of heat. On the contrary, on a hot day it feels great to get the legsfrom behind the fairing spread out into the wind. I would say the cooling off is at least as much of a relief as the stretching out.

However I, too, find I typically use the for only a few minutes at a time. I still think they are worthwhile.

But be sure to regularly grease the ball bearing and check the tightness of all screws. I have had a stuck bearing score one peg so that it would not stay locked in place and another peg just fell off somewhere. They require more preventive maintenance than the engine!

Thumbs up Illium Works Highway Pegs

I got a set of these that go on my engine guards early in the season this year. So far, so good, they do make a big difference and are a pretty good quality product. I don't have any issues with engine heat, but do find that the body work of the bike makes it difficult to get fully as comfortable as I'd like to be. I do think that adjusting the length on these to find the most comfortable spot for you is an ongoing process with these, but well worth the effort. So far I like mine very much. Good luck with your choice.

I have mounted on the engine guards on 12RT. Excellent vendor, excellent product. Yes, high on the $ side but when you see and use, you will see the value.

    Ilium Highway Peg Installation

Is it possible to mount these pegs to the frame without taking all the plastic off?

Yes, SOME of the plastic stays on the bike, lol Seriously, after a couple of times, it's not really a big deal taking the plastic off. If you're like me and keep things for a long time and do your own maintenance, you'll be an expert at pulling the tupperware.

Had mine installed a little over a year ago and decided to take them off about two months ago. They work fine for long road trips and to get some air circulation in the cockpit during warm weather. The biggest down fall for me was the loss in ground clearance. Had a difficult time committing myself to deep curves afraid of dragging the foot pegs. Took it off and had a easier time (ease of mind) banking into curves. Good thing as the foot pegs have scraped several times since then.

dude987, Do you 'hang off' or stay planted in the seat?

I definitely don't hang. Butt is planted on the seat with a forward looking lean and slightly cocked in the direction of the lean. For all its sporting characteristics it certainly has sporting capabilities more so then other sport tour bikes. But at the end of the day, it really is most comfortable being a touring bike.

I ask because you said you touched the footpegs. Hanging off is new to me but it allows the bike to take a given turn at the same speed with less lean angle. The bike stays more upright and you have a little reserve left in regards to lean angle. If you touch hard parts to the road, you are the limit of the bikes ability to turn. Not preaching just sharing what I have learned.

I've had the bolt-on Iliums for about a year. Just painted the white parts black today! Thy're mandatory for me, with my knee issues. I can get them on and off by just loosening the lower Tupperware, not removing it. Taking it off isn't so bad, just time consuming, especially when the one screw hits the floor and bounces under the freezer...

I just kick 'em under when I hit the twisties. There's not much if any loss of lean angle at all with the frame mount.

    Pegs

Put a set on mine yesterday, took the plastic off first. It was the second time I've done that and it's not a big deal. They feel comfy sitting on it in the garage, going for a test ride today.
