I am interested in doing something about the ugly (rust looking) brown headers on an otherwise beautiful 2010 RT. I loved the old "Bluing" on the airheads but now it just looks like rust. The stock muffler and the sound is great. Any advise.?

Chrome colored ceramic coating? Or any color you desire.
I think that the stainless steel headers turn brown and the chrome Headers (optional accessory) turn blue. Perhaps you could make a trade with someone who doesn't like blue?

I am trying to remember the last time I took a look at my headers. I can't remember.
And, I do my own service.

If I saw a BMW Motorcycle with headers any color but brown and black, I would think something was very WRONG with that bike or its a Brand new bike. ITS A BMW, Its suppose to be that color. A true benchmark of the Maker. IMHO.........

Well, AFAIK R1200RTs (and maybe others) were built with chrome headers or stainless headers. After a few miles the chrome headers developed a blue tone, albeit a bit splotchy, and the stainless headers developed a general non-splotchy brown/ beige color. Black? I have never seen one like that, but imagine you have somewhere...

Thanks guys for the info on the diff between stainless and chrome. That is very helpful. Motordan is correct. Baby-poop brown SUCKS. BMW said it was "suppose" to be 'Thunder-Grey' but I changed that also..Two ways to walk up to my RT and not 'see' the headers...1st: from behind...2nd: with my eyes closed., And since my first New BMW which was a 73 1/2 Slash5. I have never seen black headers....But I would prefer that over RUST !
I agree the brown pipes look awful ! I tried polishing them with metal cleaner but it did not do much. Any ideas on cleaning / polishing ?

I didn't like the look of my pipes (R1200gs) either, so last summer I started using a stiff green scrub pad and a little elbow grease. No kidding, when using soapy water and the scrub pad, all discoloration went away and the stainless looked great!
In the summer, I'll wash my bike by hand about once a week and every other wash, I'll use the scrub pad (to remove any new discoloration) with great success. Good luck!

The brown headers don't bother me at all.

I got my hood open on my 2000 Taurus and my wifes 2007 Saturn and, sure enough, the headers are brown and perhaps a bit rusty. I think I see a pattern, here, because my RT1200 headers are brown. It must be something to do with the heat coming out of the engine at that area.
