    Minor Issue - Electrons

Gentlemen and Lady (in a relative sense),

On my 1983 R80RT, once about every 10 key-offs, my headlight/running lights will stay on. I key on, then off again and they go off. Ignition switch issue?

This just started happening with no alterations recently.

Any clues or help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

According to Haynes, there are three wires going to the head light, one ground and two power wires. The power wires only go to the light switch (via the interconnect board). My guess is it's either the light switch or some kind of leak at the connections inside the headlight shell. There is a diode in the headlight circuit which is supposed to turn off the headlight during cranking. If this diode fails, I think one of the situations that can happen is that the engine can't be turned off...only by disconnecting the battery can it be turned off. Not your problem, but I wonder if there's some connection there.

More likely a failing headlight relay I'd venture.

I had similar symptoms on my airhead about 6-8 years ago and it turned out to be the headlight relay.
