GPS Speed Trap Warning Program

I saw this program offered on the Garmin Superstore site. I claims that you download this program onto your GPS and it gives you warnings of speed traps, etc.......has anyone here purchased and used this? Is it any good? Worth the money? Thanks, Don

I can't answer to the Garmin speed trap warning program, but I have used "Trapster". (smart phone app for speed traps etc.)

I found it to be pretty much useless. The program is only as good as the people willing to input information. It was full of outdated info. I really don't need to know that there was a speed trap on I 90 at mile marker 43.5 two weeks ago!

Hopefully people who have experience with the Garmin program will chime in, but I have doubts as to it's effectiveness.

Sounds like time sensitive information, which can quickly become outdated. I think data on red light cameras would be more useful.

If you are talking about these for $25.00/year you can get national radar traffic cameras updated as often as you like from them.

I go about 2 months and get a new database. I use in the Zumo 660 and another car only Garmin unit. Here, where Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Phoenix plus many little AZ towns have such cameras it is invaluable.

Yet, traveling to MOA '09 in Gray, TN, it had so many across the land, it saved me and a buddy many times!

I would save your money. Sure, there might be some spots that because of the traffic flow, terrain, visibility, etc. that allow for frequent speed enforcement, but most occurs from random "meetings." And as others have noted, just because someone reported seeing a patrol car somewhere 2 weeks ago doesn't mean that there's always going to be one there, or even that the cop was specifically looking to pull someone over.

Both Stig and brewmeister are correct, for radar traps, either use your eyes or get a V1. I need speed cam protection around this state and others, and my database works while I do the rest with my eyes or on a long trip, with the V1.

AZ-J is right about Scottsdale AZ. Those weenies have static traffic cameras all over the place.

Personally, I generally don't run my V1 in town unless I'm traveling and forget to turn it off as I get there. As a rule, I try not to speed in towns.

Of course, once I hit the open road, I understand the speed limit very well - you should too. This may help some:

I may be the only one, but hated the V1, the thing never shut up. The only thing good about it was the arrows. The Escort 9500ix doesn't get on your nerves. There's a GPS database in it with speed cameras, red light cameras, and speed traps.

It doesn't cry wolf unless you're in a new area and even then, on the third trip down a road, it will mark the false alerts and add them to the database.

Something was wrong with yours Tom. Even in town mine's pretty quiet. False signals are really rare.

I have two. One is really old and doesn't have laser. That one rides in the car with me. The other is the latest and greatest with laser and it permenently mounted on the bike.

If you still have your V-1, I'd send it in for calibration.

No, my V1 worked fine. I was a radar tech in the Navy a thousand years ago. The V1 was good enough in the boonies, but I don't live in the boonies. Instead, almost every town's police cruisers are equipped with mobile radar, most of it Ka band, but still plenty of K band and the stores and strip malls in Southern New England are also loaded with K band devices. This is why I like the Escort. It maps out the false hits on your third pass. When it goes off, you know it's a real hit.

I like http://www.poi-factory.com/ data for importing red-light and speed cameras in the Navi IV GPS (a glorified Zumo 660) to set up proximity alerts. Highly customizable alerts, too. Data are updated often and go for maybe $5?

Yes I have it downloaded on my 660 and is extremely useful.
It is NOT for radar reports.
It is for land located speed cams and red light cams that do not move. Does a good job.
I have a C3 with SRC and it comes through as a "ding ding" and shows up on display as speed cam. I prolly will update it manually (no subscription) on a yealy basis.
