Can you give me guidance on the Alt vs Tourtech crashbars? Prices are similar as are materials.......I think. What is your experience and suggestion? Thanks

I have Touratech's on my 08 RT. I took them off and tried something else, then put them back on. I like them. I have welded tabs on them for highway pegs.
Only two issues that I can think of.
1 . Instructions are a little fuzzy, but you can figure them out. Just leave everything loose untill all fasteners are installed.
2. The outer bars must be removed in order to perform a rocker cover removal (valve adjust). But I got quick at it after a few times.
Other than that I really like mine. I actually dropped it once and they are very sturdy. They will not protect the bags from a drop (learned that the hard way). I bought BMW lower case covers for that, shortly afterwards.

I just noticed you have a GS. Not sure if they need to be removed for a GS like an RT, someone may chime in and let you know.

Take a look at the Hepko Becker as well. I had those on my '09 GS, and even tested them out(involuntarily of course). No need to remove for valves etc...

I don't need to remove my HB bars to remove the valve cover, but I've tested the bars enough that I do need to loosen them a bit in order to get enough clearance to pull the covers completely off. Used to only have to do that for the right side but this spring Ms Deer evened things up by bouncing off the left side bars.
Same bike as yours and using Touratech crash bars. They do need to come off for valve adjustments but the on/off is quite quick and painless. No complaints on material or workmanship and the important thing - they do their job. Dropped the machine a couple of times at low speed and no damage to the engine. Bike was supported by the crash bar and pannier, both of which only showed very minor scratches.
