What's broken and what were you thinking of doing? I can't think of many repairs to a speedo cable. Usually it involves buying a new one.

Speedo and odometer quit. Need to find out how cable releases from trans. to see if that's the problem.
Thanks Will
The bolt that holds your neg battery cable to the trani.......right side.....also holds your cable in place.....remove the bolt........pull back the rubber boot......your cable will then be free to pull from the trani......

... and don't forget to be GENTLE when you re-install that bolt, it's easy to strip out the case ... also note that the bolt is hollow (it doubles as a vent) so you might want to make sure it's clear.

That's an unusual orientation of that bolt...normally it comes in from the left in your picture. What's the situation with yours? Or is it just hanging out in the air because it had been detached?

Really... .. it's the way it's always been. There is no hole on the "left" face of the speedo boss. In fact, until this moment, I never even noticed that there was a "flat" on the left side of that boss.
Curious. My bike is a /5.
other /5s...

Thanks, Lew...I guess I never figured that. But now that I checked, my '69 R69S has the side-facing bolt, although the battery ground cable is routed to a different bolt on the back of the transmission. Here's a pic:
But we digress!!

Hey, thanks everybody....You see, I would have had it all a**-up!
I make my living beating pieces of hardwood together.
The GS neg. is located aft of the trans. Will pull the cable out as soon as I take
the tank off and disconnect the headlight cover. Let's hope it's the cable!
You sure know how to make a guy question a decision......Looked and looked for a /5 for maybe two years, then fell onto my GS and settled for it. All those /5 photos of bolt location made me think about trading for a /5!!
Thanks again Will
Always good practice to disconnect the battery ground FIRST.Will pull the cable out as soon as I take
the tank off and disconnect the headlight cover.
You never know what little surprise will occur when you start taking things apart.
