New K 1600 GTL Owner questions

    Some touring equipment questions:

I am planning on circumnavigating the USA/Canada beginning in late April/early May for a year and have some questions for the touring riders, please.

Do Owners carry much in the way of a tool kit when touring? If so, are there specific kits which are preferred? The BMW tool kit? Others?

What about tire repair/patching kits? I have seen several on the various websites but cannot find any which jump off the page.

Do most carry a bike cover when on long trips? Any suggestion on make? Source?

    Thank you!

    Jim

    Commonly used torx bits
    Leatherman tool
    Dozen zip ties
    Small tire pump
    Flat repair plugs
    All fits under the seat

Cover is lightweight Nelson Riggs use every night, keeps bike dry and any from prying eyes

    Enjoy the adventure

    What he said!

That being said I carry a Cruz toolkit for the bmw with upgraded vice grips and a better flashlight. I use it regularly but not on the K1600. . I carry a stop-n-go plugger and compressor but again have only used it to help others.

    tire repair

Wunderluch sells the stop n go pocket tire plugger kit...very cool. all you need to have besides that is a needle nose to get the nail out.

Also they sell are very cool compressor with a built in gauge. What you should get with it (also sold on the section of the wunderlich site) is a auxillary outlet you can wire directly to the battery. You will need this because the amp draw of the compressor will shut down the canbus sytem. But going directly to the battery you bypass that. The compressor has a socket that works both with cigarette lighters and the BMW sockets. slick

Fwiw - my stop n go compressor came with battery alligator clips in addition to the outlet. Pretty easy to just lift the seat.
