    Color Code?

I just purchased a '82 R65LS and would like to return the bike to its original color . It's currently a bright red. The color code (under seat) is 563. I assume that this is not the code for Henna Red. Can anyone tell me what color 563 is and how I might get the PPG paint number for this color?

    Thanks,
    Rick T

    paint color scheme

I looked at some reference material and found the following infortion, perhaps it will help. The paint scheme for the R65LS 1982-1984 is the same as 1981.

Tank, mudguards, side panels and seat pan and tail in colour, frame in black.
R65LS: red tank, mudguards, seat tail and fairing with white wheels or those items in silver with silver wheels. Black frame, seat, side panels. Matt black exhaust system, black bars, fairing with black centre part from top of headlamp to instruments.

I believe the paint number you asked about 563 is polaris imola 1970-90 models.
51911817317 a 2 can spray set. You can still purchase BMW orginal laquer in a spray. I got mine from www.capitalcycle.com They are a mail order that has been around since my dad was riding his bike in the 60's. Very dependable and a good bunch of people too, I'm not a spokes person just a good customer, really...

Word of advise - have a professional do the painting. I painted 2 tanks, fenders and side covers for around $600. Well worth the looks I get at the vintage shows.

    Thanks for the help!

Thanks for all the great information on paint colors. This should certainly simplify my restoration planning. I was kind of hoping that the original color was silver since I already own a Henna Red model. I've painted a couple of cars and both of my Brit bikes, so I think that I'll give it a whirl. Actually, painting seems to relieve some of the stress from working in our "industrial system."

Anyone know if the r65ls decals and factory service manual are still available for this bike?

    Thanks again to all!

99% of the parts for your Airhead are still available.

Be aware that the color code on the sticker on the rear fender of an Airhead describes a complete color combination, including the pinstripes. It could also describe an unpainted vs painted rear fender.

    Yes, 563 has no pinstripes.

What's important is 563 describes a paint that features Polaris 060. That is, "BMW 060" is the color you want.

Spray paints are no longer available from BMW. Capital has old stock.

You might try looking for 060 Polaris here, trying BMW 3-series cars from the early '80s. Paint colors are interchangeable between cars and bikes. Note that this firm can mix in flex agent for painting the plastic parts.

Non of the plastic body parts on the R65 require a flex additive & I would not advise adding one as it affects gloss. Any automotive paint supplier should be able to mix the Polaris as it was used by the car division also.

My search of the Glasurit site (http://www.glasurit.com/COLOR/COLOR-Search/mfrlist.html) showed #563 as a color scheme consisting of #120 Matte Black + #121 Matte Black and #060 Polaris Imola Silver.

    Good luck on the restoration.

Do you still have the "Snortin-Norton"? Loved the one I had in '75/76. Also had a 63 Spyder(in65)...blew 4 head gaskets in 6 months...didn't know about waste gates back then. Don't know about the color, but tell me about the Norton...I still have the owners manual and last registration and have thought about trying to track it down. I'll send the vin to you.

My R60/5 is Polaris Silver (BMW 060) and I believe that should read #060 Polaris/Imola silver. From what I remember of my research prior to my respray Imola was the name for #060 in MC land and Polaris was the auto name for it. (or vice versa, it's been 10 years)
FWIW, any good paint supply store can mix that color. BMW used it for years, PPG, Dulux, Glasurit, etc all have cross refs.
