Can you provide the relative advantages of a $ 1,200 shock to something like a Progressive? While I want the best for my motorcycle, I want to understand what the differences are in the shocks available.

Greg, sorry for just now getting back with you... saw your earlier post and wanted to respond but just couldn't get it in time... as to your question...

In theory, all aftermarket shocks are an improvement over the stock BMW shocks as they are typically set up with separate gas and oil chambers, not the mixed emulsion types that BMW uses (Showa components). This allows for better dampening control. Plus, these shocks are usually rebuildable, that is you can tear them down and replace worn out components.

As to the Progressive vs. Ohlins shocks, I think either one will suffice. I checked into Works personally before settling on the Ohlins... I just heard so much good in comparison with the Ohlins. Plus the price savings I netted with my purchase over a year ago, it was a wash. I have heard good things about Progressive as well, I think you can do no wrong with that choice. I just went with Ohlins as they are pretty much at the top of the shelf for aftermarket solutions.

As to rebuilding/servicing the shocks, you may want to take that into consideration. I was quoted around $300.00 to do both shocks at every 20,000 miles. With that, the oil is replaced and any other components that needs to be replaced for wear and tear, plus my dealer is Ohlins certified to do the work, so no need to send it in to Ohlins in Hendersonville, NC.

Can you list the comparative benefits of the Ohlin's verses the Works or other shocks? The price ranges, from yss at from $75 delivered, Works delivered for about $225 to Ohlin's delivered for about $1,200, all for a single shock absorber! While you do not want to disparage the competition, can you compare the differences between these products, to justify the price difference? You implied that the comparison washed away the price differences, and I am curious what those differences are! If they are that significant (safety?) then I want them too!

Hey Roadwolf, great bunch of folks over there at Touring Sport. Ironically, the guy that was over parts before Melissa (Joey) is a salesman for Ohlins in NC now. A friend happened to send me a link to an Ohlins article. Might create some further savings for the BMW folks assuming that they would offer a discount on these too:
