Daytona Bikeweek Camping with the Florida Airheads

Take NOTE: Daytona Bikeweek this year March 4th-March 13, 2011.

The Florida Airheads chapter (referred to as Flairheads) will be camping and will have tents, coffee, sales items, and repair area for all motorcycle camping at the Holiday Travel Park, Bunnell, FL (just 15 minutes north on I95 from Daytona Beach). In the past this organization was called the B-CUBED club but that has grown into the organization known now by Flairheads (see http://www.flairheads.org for information). Come on down airheads and get your souvenir T-shirts, coffee, and take a chance to win the 50-50 nightly drawing for some real money and camp in one of the more peaceful surroundings during this fantastic week of motorcycling.

This is a great meeting area during bikeweek for all BMW oriented folks and all brands of motorcycles are invited to camp.

We look forward to seeing all our friends at this gathering.

Question What ever happened to Bulow?

For several years, I camped with BMW riders during Bike Week at Bulow. It was a total blast, with a real restaurant, delivered pizza, and two safe but rowdy bars. There were even girls - what a concept!

Then, something went off the tracks, and everything changed to the morbid attitude and relative sobriety of Holiday Park, which overcharged, over regulated, and gave this event a sort of 'dead man walking' tone. Even Kermit and Helen had trouble cheering anybody up.

The dozens of aged clowns that run Holiday seem genuinely but intently hateful toward the BMW riders.

What ever happened to the good times at Bulow? Were we kicked out, or did the organizers see a more lucrative opportunity at Holiday? In general, BMW riders are welcomed at campgrounds and hotels. Holiday treats us like Lepers. (Well, not me, anymore.)

As a former B-Cubed officer I'll take a stab at this.
IIRC the Bulow management at the time was involved in developing a large part of the camp ground into housing/condo's. When we spoke with them they said that maybe we could use the old overflow area, with all the sugar sand, but we wouldn't be exclusive as the Space Coasters had been. I never went back over there to see if they had shrunk the campground infavor of development. In short, Bulow left little for us, and there just were not any reasonably close sites available that would even consider having a seperate area for us.

Realize that the Holiday Park is owned and operated by the resident's and even though they all benefit from the income, they have limited knowledge of business sense. Each year they wanted more and offered less.

Mostly a bunch of crotchety old folks, remind you of anyone?!

I was there once and it had a very cold feeling. I won't be back to the Holiday campground.

Meanwhile, I still have all those great t-shirts and memories of the old 'Bulow' days. The end of and era.

Say what you want about the miserable old cranky bastards that own/run the Holiday Park, at least it is a place to camp and meet during bike week. I have been there many times, and never have let the MOCBs ruin it for me. The B-Cubed group are to be commended for finding and organizing the campouts, and now the Airheads deserve your support. It takes a great deal of time and effort for them to put this event on, so, in spite of the MOCBs, go out and support them.

Bulow was great in its day, but things move on. Greed got the best of the Bulow owners who thought they could sell mega-buck condos instead of renting to scooter trash.

Second what Tom says. No it's not perfect at Holiday but it is a place to go. I think the old folks do a good job. Hey they aren't spring chickens. I look forward to the run to the sun at Holiday everyyear and I thank my Florida friends for putting it on. Good job and thanks.

    Hey Ian,
Most of the folks were pretty friendly during the event, it was during the yearly planning / negotiation meetings that the "varied opinions" were noticeable.
The highway noise at Holiday is less intrusive than the Harleys running in and out of that long entrance at Bulow all night.
Frankly I haven't been back since Biketoberfest of '04 when my first K12 was knocked out from under me by an @$$hole doctor on a Harley. Bikeweek no longer has any interest for me.

    Cool Bike Week Vacancies

Last year, I avoided the moribund Holiday camping, with the bare faced, grimacing greed of its owners. I 'camped' at the hotel that the Iron Butt Association booked for their annual 'pizza party.' It was a good quality hotel, with double rooms for $64 a night, adjacent to the freeway to get to Daytona in a little over an hour. It had a swimming pool, air conditioning, was clean, no fire ants, and two bars inside. Your room included a sumptuous buffet breakfast every morning. And, you don't have to haul sleeping bags, tents, and camping paraphernalia. Splitting the room, your bill is half of $64 each instead of ~$20 each for a patch of sand and gravel.

For company, instead of exclusively BMW and Harley riders at Holiday, I had LD riders from all over the US and Canada. Most stayed for 2-3 days, and actually rode their bikes there and back. At least, the Harleys with straight pipes (maybe there were two) were an exterior wall from your bed, not a rip-stop nylon micrometer as the noise flies.

Heck, we even had indoor plumbing; you've heard of that, right?

In riding around Daytona Beach last year, I noticed a majority of hotels there had 'vacancy' signs out, some even advertising reasonable prices. Apparently, the Bike Week crowd has even driven off their own kind to the point where Daytona Beach is a fairly unpopular place to be at Bike Week.

And, to the lovely girls riding bitch on the Harleys on Main Street I say, "Please DON'T show me your t-ts! You look way closer to an old folk's home than a centerfold. Stay home, and go to Jenny Craig.

    Talking Daytona

I'm planning on jumping on the GS and leaving Austin around March 5th or 6th for Bike Week. I was thinking I'd camp a couple of nights with the Flairheads. After reading these posts, just wondering if there are other or better alternatives (like the lake view in the photo?).

I need a soft spot and showers and shade...but not a lot of action or extras around me. They can save that for Daytona!

After almost 10 years at Holiday, I am going to give the Speedway camping a try. If I don't like it, I will pack up and join you guys at Holiday. Holiday was great when the Mexican Restaurant and bar were open. What happened to them?
