I have only used it once. It was warm enough (no not incredible hot) to eliminate the cold and dampness in my tent. It was safe enough that when I forgot about it in the morning and knocked it from the overhead tent loop, it fell to the floor and immediately went out. I was skeptical and only carried, not used it for about a year, until it was so cold I had to try it. It passed both tests. My friend who gave it to me has been using one for years with no problems. I guess it could work for interior tent lighting but I wear a LED headlamp that illuminates the tent just fine. Truth is, I only need a bit of lighting to find my PJs before turning in for the night.
On my list to get is a very small battery LED lantern like Holly mentions. One to hang near but outside my tent so that when I return to my campsite in the dark, it will that much easier for me to find.
