    F800GS octane rating change

I've read that the F800GS, which requires super unleaded, can be remapped by a dealer to run on regular unleaded, like the F650GS twin, with only a small loss in power. Does any one know if this is true and whether there may be adverse consequences?

    Thanks.

The re-map was offered to me for my F800GS but I declined. I really hate to fool with something that is running well. There was also a mention that the computer on the bike could only be updated a finite number of times-IIRC 13. That's about all that I've stumbled upon. Hopefully someone has a little more info. Gary

super unleaded? my '09 F8GS runs great on mid-grade, and even a bit of the regular stuff does not seem to bother it at all.

Yes it can be remapped, and as other user pointed out there is a limit to how many times the "brain" can be reprogrammed - I think it 12 times, so you would not want to plan on flipping this setting on and off ... ;-)

There are some threads on this topic over on ADVRider or F800Riders .... but the short story is that is shaves off a couple of HP, but does not seem to induce any drivability issues....

The "twins" do not have a knock sensor so if you planned on riding in areas where the octane rating was questionable it might be a good idea

Thumbs up Thanks for the info

Thanks to all for your input. I did have a BMW service department response that it could be done, so I will probably do that when I receive the F800GS that I have purchased. My reason for wanting to switch to regular unleaded is that my wife uses that grade of gas in her F650 twin and it would be nice if we could fill both bikes up at the same pump. As long as the only identified problem is the loss of a little power, I can live with that because I wouldn't have need to all the power that's only available at the top anyway.

On delivery there may be a higher level of firmware released for your bike they the dealership (should) install anyway ... If they can do it and knock down the octane rating at the same time you may get a 2:1 deal ...
