Drum roll......
I was told by my Airhead guru to put some security straps on my luggage or be a VERY unhappy camper- so I rolled my own. My first attempt was made from Chineseum black plastic quick release clips and low thread count rayon webbing I purchased at a local fabric store. Unfortunately they wouldn't take much abuse and kept slipping, even after I cinched them tight. From my previous experience with these plastic buckles I knew they would last about a year in sunlight before failing under even light loading.
So, after researching military specification hardware (I've been a Commercial Pilot for 28 years and know what the good stuff is...) here's the end result:
AirLok Luggage Security Straps - "When it absolutely, positively has to stay ON the bike!"
Specifications
*56" overall length, 1" wide 700 lb. test, UV resistant USAmade polypropylene webbing (the thick stuff)
*Sewn with FAA Certified thread from USAbased Synthetic Thread Company.
*Unique cam buckle lock is made in the USAfrom heat treated alloy steel, breaking strength of 600 lbs. and a working load of 300 lbs. You'll be putting about 3 lbs. of tension on this when clamped. You pre-set the tension when you pull on the free end of the strap, and the lock snaps shut securely. It can't be accidentally opened - it only opens when you purposely pull up on the free end of the strap. The free end also tucks neatly through the bottom slot in the protector to keep it from flapping in the wind. This buckle is used on the USS Ronald Reagan nuclear aircraft carrier to keep work stations and cargo in place!
*Black powder coat finish on main body, bronze chromate finish on wire bale. (...that can be hand polished to bright steel as shown with a rag and some Simichrome, Autosol, or similar metal polish in about a minute)
*.04" thick polyethylene protector not only keeps the case surface from getting scuffed, it grips and prevents the strap from sliding sideways when in use!
*Guaranteed not to slip, and a lifetime guarantee on all components against failure for the original owner. Designed for extreme use, not to exceed rated values.
* Other custom sizes available, just let us know what length you need, same price. Also great for securing Jerry cans on your jeep or heavy cargo in the bed of your pick up truck. Lots of uses!
