    76' r900

I've had the bike now for about 9 months or so now and haven't gotten motivated to do nothing at all with it...
It needs a battery and possibly the carbs flushed out so it would run...
The Dr. I got it from has said it was running up till the time his children had taken it away from him so they removed the front caliper so he would not get the whim to ride it and hurt him self...
I bought the bike with the thought of going thru and more or less customizing it in some nice colors including the frame and more or less restoring it...

I'm a harley owner/rider and have all the standard wrenches and knowledge that goes with the H-D's but nothing on the BMW in metric to speak of...

I have kind of tossed around the idea of just selling it and get a H-D project to work on...

My question to you guys is whats the bike worth? If I decide to put it up for sale I would like to get a good price for it as well as make the new owner a good buy where he doesn't feel bad about the deal...
It has after market saddle bags, tour pack, front shark nose fairing...
There is neglect on the bike where the weather has taken it's toll but nothing serious that can't be cleaned up...the sheet metal is all good...The wheels are spoked and needs new spokes due to the oxidation/rust on the spokes...
the bike on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being so bad nothing is salvageable and 10 being showroom condition
    I'd give this one a 5.5-6
The OVAL condition doesn't appear to be that bad, just needs some TLC...The bike has all the parts along with some extra's...I am the 2nd owner and the bike, originally has been owned by a Dr. here in Texas so I'm going out on a limb and say the bike was purchased here in Texas and has resided here in Texas all its life...Other then the road trips he and his wife took thru out the country
I don't get back here to often so if you would like to E-mail me you can do so at
    pmay54@tx.rr.com
Thanks for any light you can help with

The #1 question I'd ask as a buyer (as it greatly affects value) is:

What is the condition of the rubber boot that seals the point at which the speedo cable enters the transmission (at the right rear upper corner on the tranny)? If water enters the tranny through this boot (very common on bikes that have sat outside for long periods), a $$$ tranny rebuild will likely be needed.

I checked the seal and it looks like it is in great shape...Doesn't look at all aged with any cracks what so ever...

Great -- a definite plus for you.

Looking forward to the pics -- there's just no way of providing even a semi-accurate valuation of a "not-pristine" R90/6 without being able to see condition.

You'd give that a 5.5 to a 6.0 on a scale of 10 huh?... Sorry but all I see is someone spending a lot of time and accumulating a huge pile of bills!

Seriously, I've bought nicer looking BMWs for next to nothing and parted em out but that doesn't mean that that one isn't a good project bike. I really could be for the right guy. The only question is whether you have the intestinal fortitude and enthusiasm to complete the project and it sounds as if you don't.

Thats a 1974 R90/6 right? I'm judging from the early transmission and the solid disk. When was the last time the bike was running? How long was it stored outside? How many miles are on it? Do you have the service records? Does the engine turn over? Pull the plugs and examine the bores. Any water or rust? So many questions and so little information at hand and the BIG QUESTION IS....

How much did you pay for it and what do you want for it?

To me, thats the most important question of all because I doubt that that bikes going to be a good deal for anyone. Part of my judgment is based on having done one of those resurrections and the other part is simply based on my gut feeling and I don't get a good feeling about that particular bike. Lastly, photographs always make bikes look better than they are and that bike looks very weathered and corroded from here.

Drain the trans and check for water in the oil. Just because the rubber cap is good doesn't mean that water didn't seep down the cable and into the trans. Drain and look at the engine oil. How does it look? Does it smell like gas? Any water in it? Spin the rear wheel and try shifting the bike from gear to gear. If all of those indicators are positive, you can move forward. If not, it's only worth what the parts will bring on Ebay.

Sorry to sound so negative but I'm giving you the straight dope as I see it.
