Funny you should mention it Paul because Rita's is on the bill! After running across the ferry at Little Narrows we meander over to Rita's for lunch on the day after Larry's River and on the way to Louisbourg. Last year there was a lot of LONG wait construction going on in that area so we took another route. Thanks again for another of your ride enhancement ideas Paul. -Bob

Tuesday morning look for more Salty Fog Riders Rally info. A bit slow out of the gate this year but hope that we can raise enough interest for folks to come to our part of Atlantic Canada. Mary and I will be at the RA and can provide information beyond what may get presented here. So, are you looking for just over a week of east coast bliss to polish off your August intinerary? Stay tuned - Bob

The construction area heading towards Rita's was quite challenging with a fully loaded RT. Hope the road is ready for your rally.

Thanks for the nudge to get an update on the road construction in that area. According to our road construction authorities, there is no work being done on route 4 (where Rita's is located). Last year was terrible. I rode through it and subsequently diverted the Salty Fog Riders Rally route up through Little Narrows (which turned out to be much more scenic and twisty...... we will retain this route and back track on 4 to include Rita's ). I will likely ride up along the route some time in July to be sure that no serious construction exists. - Bob

Road update Re: Rita's for lunch http://www.ritamacneil.com/tearoom.html. A call to Rita's and was told that the road is excellent with no construction and they would (as you would expect) be happy to accommodate us for lunch on Tuesday the 24th . It's only a 15 minute departure from the scheduled route. N45 53198 W060 34748 - Bob

CAMPSITE #2 LOUISBOURG August 24th Tuesday; Camp Cost: $10 per person From this site it's a short walk to food and, for those interested, live theater (see earlier post about this). A short ride takes you to Fortress Louisbourg. Plan a few hours for this excellent tour into the past. Many other riding/visit options are available for those interested in other pursuits. The next camp is only under two hours away so there is lots of time to explore.

This is the campground at Louisbourg (all facilities available) N45 55217 W059 58283

NEXT CAMP: Baddeck; 73 miles/120 km

    4) Campsite #4 MEAT COVE August 26th Camp Costs: $10 per person N47 01588 W060 33556

Our last night on the road is the Edge of the Earth Gathering on the cliffs of Meat Cove. A fine canteen is on site with great fish and chips. Riding that eight miles of dirt road is worth it! A spectacular panarama awaits.

    The ride

The Ride covers about 500 miles but riders who may have other commitments or interests can join at any point. However, if you plan to join up at any particular campsite we must know in advance because of the group rate arrangements. At $10 per night this is a bargain. Without being part of this ride each night camping is about $25 per site. More about the costing later. For now the overview of content.

Larry's River Basecamp on the 23rd will have ongoing coffee, snacks, supper and breakfast at a break even cost. Arrival here can be at any time on the 23rd. Departure the next day is at 8 am with arrival at the first camp in Louisbourg to be about 2pm. From Larry's River to The Canso Causeway (gateway to Cape Breton Island) is 50 mi / 80 km. This is the map of that section:

NEXT: Onto the Island...onto the cable ferry...across Little Narrows and across the 'mini Cabot Trail' at Grand Narrows and onward toward lunch and Louisbourg.

    the ride

... now we're on Cape Breton Island. We move along the Trans Canada ((105) on the northwest side of beautiful Bras d'Dor Lake and catch the Little Narrows cable ferry (about $1 each if we are doing a group) across St Patrick's Channel. #223 to Grand Narrows and then #216 to #4 on the east side of Bras d'Or Lake. It's about noon so we ride about 15 minutes down to Big Pond Centre for lunch a Rita's Tea House (you know the singer Rita MacNeil eh?). From here we move north along #4 ...east on Morley Rd.....north to Marion Bridge and cross the Mira River (you know that song? Song of the Mira?) ..... and along the Fleur-de-Lis Trail to Louisbourg.

That run is 170 mi / 270 km. Add one hour for lunch and Louisbourg arrival should be about 2 pm.
