    2003 F650GS Crash Bars

I am interested in reviews from those who have added crash bars, particularly about how well the various bars work when the bike is laid down.

I found a picture on the internet some time ago of an F650GS used as a police bike with crash bars (attached). I don't recognize these bars. Anyone know who makes the bars in the bottom picture?

The OEM bars look to me like they don't stick out far enough to protect anything but the engine itself. I saw an F650GS at a BMW Rally in Galena, IL last year that had conventional looking crash bars. The bike was parked with no owner in sight or I would have asked him where he bought the bars. I like these conventional bars because it looks to me like they stick out far enough that if you lay the bike down they will prevent any other part of the bike from hitting the pavement and keep your leg from getting pinched by the bike hitting the road. Also, highway pegs can be added to the crash bars. Truth is, I don't know what I'm talking about because I don't have any experience with laying a bike down while on the street.

The Hepco Becker bars (below) look like they stick out a bit more most F650GS crash bars, but not nearly as much as in the police bike pic at the bottom or the ones I saw at the Galena Rally.

I have SW Motech bars on my '03 Dakar. They don't stick out nearly as far as the ones in your pics. I got them at Twisted Throttle. You can check them out here http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade...tview/410/754/

    More crash bar questions

Would also be interested to hear comments from those with experience as crash bars are on my shopping list. I'm thinking the Motech are good street riding/crashing (they look great, HUD, how do you like them?), but would they keep a rock from cracking something off-road? Are the other type which look to keep the entire side of the bike off the ground better for off-road/road combo riding? I have little experience either way, my off-road riding has been on smaller dirt bikes and not on particularly rugged terrain.

I've been happy with my Holan upper crash bars, tho haven't tested them yet. Very well made and sturdy. I assume their lower bars are just a well made.

I like the bars in the OPs picture, but the only Hepco Becker stuff I can find now curves back. http://secure.capitalcycle.com/Hepco...502.660+00+01/

I like the way that the photos show it sticking out more.

Any other ideas where one would find the crash bars in the photos in post #1?
