The oil filter on the 800/650 twin appears similar to the oil filter on the 1200 models. Does anyone know if they are interchangable? I know the part numbers are different but that may not mean the actual filters are different.

Paul,
BeemerBoneyard's site say the Hex/Wedge filters also fit the new twins as well.

earlier K/R model spin-on filters are also a correct fit- unless you are running a bash plate that extends over teh oil filter and limits the filter length (i've got the Adventure Spec unit, and it makes it too snug by a 1/2" or so).
K&N makes a good aftermarket filter that fits correctly as well.
Ride Safe, Ride Lots
There have been discussions on this in ADVrider and else where. The two part numbers are different filters in terms of physical size and bypass valve design. BMW says the parts are different and the revised newer filter is now the filter advised for the F800/F650 twins while the original part is the proper filter for the R1200/K1200/K1300 engines. I'm not sure what Beemer Boneyard knows that BMW engineering doesn't, but I will go with BMW's recommendation. I figure with all the money spent on accessories it is really foolish to go cheap and experiment with the wrong filter. I buy the correct BMW filters in lots of 6 from Chicago BMW mail order and the adjusted price is competitive to other options. No warranty issues and piece of mind is pricelessThe best part is the filters are the correct ones for this bike.
