Thumbs up A modest proposal -- virtual rallies

Several MOA members and mods have brought their MOA squabbles over to ADV, where some MOA forum controversy about Tavern on the Screen is as we speak attracting attention from a wider audience and I'm sure garnering new members and renewals.

Since that initiative is going gangbusters, I thought that maybe for 2011, the MOA should consider going to a virtual model for the national Rally -- instead of actually traveling somewhere to rally and camp, we can just all log on to a forum based in, say, Maine, or Arizona or whatever, and 'rally' for the MOA cause from the comfort of our own keyboards.

Only if you are a member of a "virtual" club will you be allowed to attend.

It's virtually impossible to drink beer.

What will we do for a beer tent or at least a tavern?

Think of the liability insurance costs the club can save. Venue rental fees? No problemo! Just bring your own beer!

If we were really dedicated to the idea of 'communication, based upon the mutual sharing of individual ideas, talents, concepts and experiences', we could bring our sharing and communicating to several other forums a day. Think of the outreach! It would be awesome!

To heck with visiting other forums. I think we should make a list of the weak ones and then go and take them over, eventually closing them down and forcing the users to register here.

Notice how this proposal seems to revolve around beer?

You know, I guess ADV Rider just attracts a certain type. I've been to the site on occasion but never fail to come across something that I just don't need to spend my time reading.

You know, cogent, salient thoughts like this for instance:

"That s**thole full of stiffnecks need an eye opener every now and then."

I know that many here are there as well and I am not passing judgment. If it's for you, more power. It's just not for me.

Many agree with you. Different strokes for different folks. As mentioned earlier, that's why there are choices in the type of beer available at the rally (I had to get a beer reference in here to keep hlothery happy Hugh) . There are different forums for folks who want different stuff.

We don't need to be AdvRider and they don't need to be us. The psot you quoted from there just reinforces the choices people make.

I reckon that I'd have to disagree a bit. I think that ADV, like this website, attracts many "types". Some of the more computer-oriented extroverts tend to express themselves in the JM forum on ADV. Others folks write compelling ride reports. Still others discuss and illustrate complex maintenance procedures in "Old's Cool".

For myself, I avoid JM and keep mostly to the Ride Reports and Old's Cool. ADV has probabaly an order of magnitude greater participants than does this website.

The cost of visiting ADV is zero, monetary contributions are voluntary. As long as I can control the threads that I visit, I'm very satisfied with ADV.
